F1 Results: Norris and Piastri Explain Pre-Race Issues in China
In the latest f1 results from the Chinese Grand Prix, both McLaren drivers failed to start the race after separate pre-race problems forced their cars back into the garage. The team had qualified on the third row, but neither car made it to the formation lap.
Double DNS After Pre-Race Failures
It was a nightmare end to the Chinese Grand Prix weekend for McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri unable to take the start. The squad had qualified with Piastri fifth and Norris sixth, but issues arose as the field prepared to form up on the grid: Norris’s car remained in the garage while the crew worked, and Piastri’s machine was also returned to the garage prior to the formation lap. Ultimately, neither driver made it out in time for the race, resulting in a double DNS for the team.
Drivers’ Diagnoses and Team Reaction
Piastri described the problem affecting his car as an “electrical problem on the power unit, different to Lando’s, ” and said the outcome was “obviously disappointing. ” He noted that the team does not fully know more than that at this point. Piastri added that, after watching the race, the focus will be on learning what they can and doing as much work as possible before Japan to find more performance.
Norris said there was “not a huge amount” he could share, calling it “an issue that’s not letting us even start the car. ” He said the team was still trying to investigate why the car was not working as it should and described the situation as frustrating given the effort put in by the whole team. The reigning World Champion suggested McLaren “just got to take it on the chin, ” stressing the need to learn what the problems were, noting the two issues were different on each car, and to ensure they do not happen again.
Those f1 results leave McLaren with immediate technical questions to resolve and a stated focus on repairing and understanding the failures before the next event. Piastri also highlighted the personal disappointment of a second consecutive non-start after missing his home event in Australia one week earlier following a crash en route to the grid.
McLaren’s next steps, as outlined by the drivers, are to investigate the electrical and other faults, learn from the weekend by reviewing the race, and concentrate on extracting more performance ahead of the following round.
