How the Sprint Unfolded

The Mercedes driver started from pole for the 19-lap Sprint and initially held the lead through the opening corners before Lewis Hamilton surged at Turn 9. Hamilton and Russell traded the lead early, with Russell making the decisive move into the Turn 14 hairpin on Lap 5 to pull clear of both Hamilton and Leclerc.

The race featured an early frenetic tussle for position, and contact between Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar at Turn 4 left Antonelli with a poor start and later a penalty. A late Safety Car was called when Nico Hulkenberg’s stricken Audi needed to be retrieved, prompting a late pit-stop sequence that shuffled the order in the closing laps.

F1 Standings

Russell held on to take the Sprint win, with Leclerc finishing just 0. 6 seconds behind and Hamilton recovering to third after being forced to stack behind Leclerc during the late pit stops. Russell’s victory continued his perfect run at the start of the season.

The Sprint classified finishers were:

  • 1st: George Russell
  • 2nd: Charles Leclerc
  • 3rd: Lewis Hamilton
  • 4th: Lando Norris
  • 5th: Kimi Antonelli
  • 6th: Oscar Piastri
  • 7th: Liam Lawson
  • 8th: Ollie Bearman
  • 9th: Max Verstappen
  • 10th: Esteban Ocon

They were followed across the line by Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto. Isack Hadjar finished P15, with Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll completing later classified positions and Sergio Perez the final classified runner for Cadillac.

Penalties, Retirements and Notable Incidents

Kimi Antonelli was handed a 10-second penalty for the collision with Isack Hadjar after struggling from the front row at the start. The late Safety Car reshuffled strategies and led to a flurry of pit stops that affected the order, with Hamilton having to stack behind Leclerc in the pits before emerging in third.

There were several retirements: Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas failed to finish, with Bottas suffering a loss of power. Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad also failed to finish after suffering an opening-lap spin.

The second McLaren of Oscar Piastri dropped a position late to Antonelli to finish sixth, while Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Haas’ Ollie Bearman scored the final Sprint points after electing not to pit under the late caution.

Fernando Alonso said he could not ‘physically’ continue in the Chinese Grand Prix, a notable development among the Aston Martin runners for the main event.

With the Sprint concluded, attention will turn to the main Grand Prix where teams and drivers will regroup and tackle the challenges remaining at the Chinese round.
