In the video, Gellar said she was sad to share the news and wanted fans to hear it from her directly. She noted that the streaming platform had decided “not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale. “
Gellar used the opportunity to thank Chloé Zhao, who had been attached to direct the continuation. She said she never thought she would find herself back in Buffy’s “stylish, yet affordable boots, ” and credited Zhao for reminding her how much the character means to her and to fans. Gellar closed her message with a nod to one of the series’ most popular lines, adding, “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me. “

It was reported last year that the 90s series would return as Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, with Gellar returning as Buffy Summers and Chloé Zhao set to direct.
