Ruby Reynolds and her father, Justin, were searching the Somerset shore when Justin spotted a four-inch scrap of bone. Ruby later uncovered another fragment that lay nearly exposed on the muddy shore. Photographs of the finds were examined by paleontologist Dean Lomax, who recognized the material as ichthyosaur remains. The newly found fragments matched a partial jawbone recovered in 2016 by local collector Paul de la Salle. When the two pieces were compared and reassembled, they revealed a jaw more than 6½ feet long and evidence that the fossils belonged to a single, unusually large species.

How Scientists Estimated an 82-Foot Giant

Researchers published a study in PLOS ONE naming the animal Ichthyotitan severnensis. The jawbone length and comparisons with other ichthyosaur specimens were used to scale the species up, producing an estimate that the full animal could have reached roughly 82 feet in length — a size commentators noted is comparable to a modern blue whale. Lomax described the fossils as “unusual and exceedingly large, ” and said the creature was “genuinely enormous, about the length of a blue whale. ” Internal bone textures examined by researchers suggested the animal was still growing at death, indicating some individuals may have reached even greater dimensions.

Why the Find Matters and What Comes Next

The combined discoveries rewrite expectations about size in Triassic marine predators. The jaw structure and preserved features point to a streamlined animal adapted for long-distance cruising in open seas. Examination of teeth and bone surfaces suggested a diet that included fish, squid-like cephalopods, and smaller marine reptiles, and showed signs of scavenger activity after death. The find places Ichthyotitan severnensis among the largest known ichthyosaurs and highlights how much remains to be discovered along the Somerset coastline. Scientists said the specimen offers the first clear evidence of a truly gigantic Triassic ichthyosaur and raises the prospect that more substantial remains — potentially a complete skull or skeleton — could yet be found.

Ruby Reynolds described her reaction simply: “It was just sort of lying there. I was just happy, really. ” Justin recalled the initial scrap as “bigger than any piece of bone I’d ever found before. ” Lomax noted that earlier fragments fit together “like an ancient prehistoric jigsaw puzzle, ” and the combined material ultimately supported the naming and scaling of Ichthyotitan severnensis.

The discovery anchors a dramatic new chapter in studies of Triassic seas, showing a predator that achieved blue whale–scale size before the mass extinction events that later reshaped marine life.
