London’s Burning Actor John Alford Dies In Prison

John Alford, the 54-year-old former star of Grange Hill and London’s Burning, has died in prison two months after he was jailed for sexually assaulting two teenage girls. He was found dead at HMP Bure in Norfolk, and a formal investigation into the death has been announced.

John Alford: Conviction And Sentence

Prosecutors tried the actor under his birth name, and a jury found him guilty of multiple sexual offences against two girls aged 14 and 15. He was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with the younger girl and of sexual assault and assault by penetration of the older teenager. At trial, the court heard the incidents took place at a friend’s house in Hertfordshire in April 2022 and that he had provided alcohol to the teenagers. He denied the offences at trial and, when the verdicts were delivered, reacted from the dock by saying he had not committed the crimes.

Following the guilty verdicts, he was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison. The sentencing judge said the offences had a “significant and ongoing impact” on the victims’ lives. The actor was jailed on 14 January and died in custody roughly two months later.

Circumstances Of Death And Prison Statement

The 54-year-old was found dead at HMP Bure in Norfolk. A Prison Service spokesman confirmed the death and released a statement saying: “John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate. ” The prison statement indicates an independent inquiry into the circumstances of the death will take place.

Earlier reporting from the trial record indicates he was prosecuted under his real name, John Shannon. Details in court described how the girls had been given alcohol at a friend’s home and that the defendant exploited the situation. The convictions at St Albans Crown Court followed a week-long trial and lengthy jury deliberations.

Career Background And Past Offences

Once a television actor who reached a broad audience, he first rose to attention in the mid-1980s playing a rebellious schoolboy and later gained wider recognition in the 1990s for a role as a firefighter. His television profile in the 1990s led to a brief pop career. The actor had previously been sacked from a television show and jailed for nine months after a conviction in 1997 for supplying controlled drugs to an undercover journalist.

Those earlier convictions and career setbacks were part of a public record of legal and personal troubles that preceded the later trial and conviction for sexual offences.

With the death now confirmed in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an investigation. The convictions, the sentence imposed earlier this year, and the announced inquiry frame the next steps in official proceedings and public scrutiny surrounding his case.
