Bianca Andreescu to Face Lanlana Tararudee in Austin 125 Final After Beating Paula Badosa
Bianca Andreescu advanced to the final of the Austin 125 with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Spain’s Paula Badosa on Friday in Texas and will meet Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand in the championship match on Saturday.
Andreescu’s win and route back toward bigger events
The 25-year-old Andreescu, whose ranking has slipped to No. 165 after several injury-plagued seasons, won a three-set semi-final to reach the biggest final she has played in two years. The Canadian has played mostly smaller events this year as she works to re-establish herself in higher-level WTA draws.
Andreescu earned a wild card into the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells last week and lost in the first round. Her run to the Austin 125 final guarantees she will climb into the top 150 in next week’s rankings.
Match details, rankings and stakes
Andreescu beat a former top player in Paula Badosa, taking the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Badosa is a former world No. 2 and has fallen to No. 106. The Austin 125 is one of the lowest-level tour events, and Andreescu has used these tournaments to rebuild match play and ranking points after injuries.
Andreescu reached a career-high No. 4 in 2019 when she won the U. S. Open and two other tournaments. The Mississauga, Ontario product is aiming to convert this momentum into regular main-draw appearances at higher-level events.
Final showdown: Lanlana Tararudee awaits in Austin
In the final at Austin on Saturday, Andreescu will face world No. 124 Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand. The championship presents a chance for Andreescu to collect valuable ranking points and a title as she continues her comeback.
The outcome of the final will determine how quickly Andreescu can move back toward the main WTA Tour events she has targeted this season.
