Born in Pontypridd, Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984 and remained the band’s guitarist until they disbanded in 2015 following the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister. He was recruited to join the group after the exit of guitarist Brian Robertson and initially worked alongside another second guitarist.
Over his tenure with Motörhead he contributed to numerous records and was part of the band behind heavy metal anthems including “Ace of Spades. ” He went on to release music under his own name and with Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, including a solo album and several releases with his post-Motörhead band. Earlier plans for a European tour with the Bastard Sons were canceled when the band said the tour was called off on medical advice received by Campbell.

Staff at the venue said they were saddened by the news and that Campbell had been a major influence on the music scene. Fellow musicians also paid tribute: one German heavy metal singer said she was “at a loss for words” and called it an honour to have been his friend.
