Friday's windstorm tore through Southeast Michigan and it is not done yet. As of Saturday morning, DTE Energy has the most customers out of any utility in Michigan with 74,812 power outages statewide. Wayne County is the hardest hit, with 29,484 customers without power — 3.77% of all customers in the county.

What Caused the Outages

A powerful high wind event began battering Michigan Friday, knocking out power for tens of thousands of DTE Energy and Consumers Energy customers from Metro Detroit to West Michigan. Southwest wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph were expected throughout Friday, with the potential for widespread outages continuing through the evening hours.

The gusts exceeded those forecasts in several locations. The National Weather Service in Detroit said wind gusts were reaching in excess of 55 mph, including a gust of 71 mph observed in Ann Arbor. That single reading explains much of the damage concentrated in Washtenaw County.

Wind damage was listed as the cause for many of the outages, with fallen trees and broken branches taking down lines across the Metro Detroit area, including Flat Rock, South Lyon, and Royal Oak.

Where the Outages Are Concentrated

The storm spread damage across multiple counties simultaneously. The High Wind Warning covered Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties.

Earlier Friday, DTE was reporting outages in Lapeer County with 973 customers affected, with the largest clusters in North Branch, Lum, and Goodland. South Lyon was among the hardest-hit spots early in the day with over 2,000 customers out. Wayne County has since overtaken all others as the primary impact zone.

DTE's Response: 1,000+ Crews Deployed

DTE says it has assigned more than 1,000 crew members to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Consumers Energy deployed 450 crews of its own across the state. Both utilities are asking customers for patience given the scale of simultaneous repairs required.

Type your address into the search bar to see your neighborhood's status and estimated restoration time.

How to Report Your Outage and Stay Safe

To report an outage, call DTE's 24-hour line at 1-800-477-4747 or report online at outage.dteenergy.com. For downed power lines, call 911 and stay at least 30 feet away — assume every downed line is energized and dangerous.

On food safety: the U.S. Department of Agriculture advises keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed during an outage. A fully stocked refrigerator can stay cold for about four hours. A freezer will keep its temperature for 24 hours if half full, or 48 hours if full.
