Dom Ball: Cambridge United Need Variety To Seal Automatic Promotion
Dom Ball, who has made 29 appearances for Cambridge United this season, said the club must find creative ways to break down teams sitting deep as they chase automatic promotion after being held 1-1 at Accrington Stanley.
Cambridge United Need Variety To Break Down Defences
Ball said that while Cambridge United put a lot of good balls into the box, they must “change it up a little bit more” because opponents are now “giving us the respect now, sitting off us, ” and the side will have to find different methods to get through parked defences. He added that the squad contains players with promotion experience, offering a blend of intensity and calm when it matters, and warned that “there’s 11 games to go and there’s going to be moments in games that aren’t straightforward and we need to be calm in those moments. “
The club have been difficult to beat, having only been beaten once in their last 20 league games and winning 12 of those matches, but Ball emphasised the need for variety in attack to convert dominance into more consistent victories.
Accrington Draw Highlights Finishing Issues
Cambridge dominated possession at Accrington Stanley, controlling 76% of the ball, but fell behind to a 25th-minute goal from Farrend Rawson and required an 81st-minute Louis Appere equaliser to rescue a point. The draw left them third in the table, below MK Dons on goal difference and five points behind leaders Bromley.
Manager Neil Harris criticised his side’s finishing after the match, saying their lack of clinical edge had hurt results earlier in the season and that Friday’s training session had been disappointing quality-wise. He noted that while “the mentality, the attitude and application (in the game) was first class, ” the technical quality was lacking and that they had created numerous chances without being clinical enough.
Harris admitted players might regard him as a “moaner” but indicated he will continue to demand high standards until the club achieves promotion.
Squad Experience, Defensive Strength and Next Steps
Ball’s experience includes reaching consecutive promotions with Ipswich Town and past honours in Scotland, contributing to a squad that mixes players who have been there before with those adding fresh energy. Cambridge United’s defensive record is notable, with a goals-against total of 28, the lowest in the fourth tier, underpinning their promotion push even as attacking variety is sought.
The team returns to home action against Gillingham next, where the squad will look to convert dominance into a more clinical edge and maintain the momentum required to close the gap on the top two. With the promotion run-in under way, Ball and the manager both signalled a focus on tactical adjustments, finishing practice, and calm decision-making in decisive moments.
