Rick O’Shea Named ‘Arena’ Presenter at Rte Radio 1, Ending Search After 200-Plus Submissions
Rick O’Shea has been confirmed as the new presenter of rte radio 1’s weeknight arts and culture programme Arena, formally moving from an interim role to the permanent host following a broad call for expressions of interest.
What the Appointment Means for ‘Arena’
The decision secures long-term continuity for a flagship arts show that had been in transition since the death of its long-time presenter, Seán Rocks, last summer. O’Shea stepped in as stand-in host after Rocks’s passing and now assumes the role permanently. Arena has been a long-standing feature on the national airwaves and was presented by Rocks from its inception in 2009 until his death following a brief illness.
, O’Shea said he already knew the role intimately after his months at the microphone. “Having been stand-in presenter of Arena since our wonderful and much missed colleague Seán Rocks died in July of last year, I can already tell you that presenting the programme is the most wonderful job on radio and that the Arena production team are the best in the business. ”
Rocks, a teacher and celebrated actor before moving into broadcasting, was widely respected in the arts community. He was described by then-president Michael D Higgins as “a public service broadcaster in the truest sense. ” O’Shea’s appointment marks a measured handover for a programme closely associated with Rocks’s voice and curatorial sensibility.
From Interim Host to Permanent Voice
O’Shea brings a long track record within the broadcaster. He previously fronted The Rick O’Shea Show on 2FM for 16 years and later hosted RTÉ Gold’s weekday afternoon jazz programme, The Gold Lounge. He has worked as a radio presenter with the organization since 2001, experience that has shaped an interviewing style rooted in deep familiarity with the creative industries.
Reflecting on the scope of the arts brief, O’Shea said his career has centered on conversations with cultural figures across disciplines. “Having spent most of my career talking to writers, filmmakers, actors and musicians in many settings, it will be an absolute honour getting to continue to shine a spotlight on work from them, as well as composers, artists, animators, conductors, playwrights, and curators every night on RTÉ’s flagship arts programme. ”
The permanent appointment suggests that Arena’s editorial direction will remain focused on expansive, nightly coverage of books, film, theatre, music, and visual culture, while honoring the legacy built since 2009. With O’Shea already embedded alongside the production team, listeners can expect a steady hand rather than a wholesale reset.
Selection Process at Rte Radio 1
The broadcaster invited an expression of interest call-out for the post and received more than 200 submissions, underscoring the prestige and visibility of the role within Irish arts coverage. O’Shea emerged from that process with the permanent brief to front the weeknight programme.
His selection follows a period in which the team maintained output during a difficult transition. The move from interim to permanent host concludes the search and provides certainty for guests, contributors, and audiences who rely on the nightly slot for cultural coverage. The appointment cements his role on rte radio 1 and signals a continued commitment to in-depth conversations across the arts.
