Tyrone Williams: Chesterfield Fc Defender Retires At 31 After Serious Injury
Chesterfield Fc defender Tyrone Williams has announced his retirement from playing at the age of 31. Williams made 87 appearances for the club, scoring six goals, and has thanked staff, team-mates and supporters for an “incredible chapter” as he brings his playing career to a close.
Injury At Swindon and Medical Recovery
Williams did not play again after suffering a serious neck/spinal injury in a match at Swindon Town in February 2025. He was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital and later underwent surgery. The injury ended his on-field involvement after more than four years with the Spireites.
Chesterfield Fc Reaction And Tributes
Manager Cook paid tribute to the “courage” Williams showed in his recovery, recalling how he returned to training after the injury. Cook said: “From being in Swindon in hospital just over 12 months ago, to see him return to training and try his best to resurrect his football career with such courage, was amazing to watch. “
Cook added that seeing Williams return to being himself was the most important outcome for the player and his family, and indicated the club intends to mark his time at the team. He said the club would arrange an event — whether an evening, a dinner or a game — to give Williams the opportunity to say goodbye to fans, describing him as “one of the best. ” The club also said: “Everyone at Chesterfield Football Club would like to thank Tyrone for his efforts whilst in North Derbyshire and wish him the very best for the future. “
Club Career And On-Field Record
Williams joined the club from Solihull Moors and made 87 appearances for the Spireites, scoring six goals. He played a significant role in the side that won the National League title in 2024, including 22 league appearances in the 2023-24 season. Williams has continued to attend games and has publicly thanked the club and supporters: “Thank you to everyone at Chesterfield FC for an incredible chapter, a chapter I’ll never forget and memories to last a lifetime, ” he said.
Cook emphasised the positive aspects of Williams’s decision to retire, saying he has the whole of his life in front of him and will receive continued support from the club and its fanbase. The club and supporters from Swindon were noted for rallying around Williams following the injury, and he expressed gratitude for the encouragement that carried him through his recovery.
The club will now plan how to honour Williams’s contribution to the team and give supporters the opportunity to pay tribute as he steps away from playing.
