Virgin River Season 8 Set for Cast Changes as Two Longtime Characters Exit After Season 7
virgin river season 8 is moving forward with notable cast departures: Marco Grazzini, who has played Mike Valenzuela for five seasons and was a series regular for the past four, will not return, and Lauren Hammersley, who has played Charmaine across the show’s seven-season run to date, also will not be back next season.
Virgin River Season 8: Who’s Leaving and What’s Been Confirmed
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that Grazzini is not returning for Season 8. Hammersley also is not returning next season, though Smith said both actors could return in subsequent seasons.
The departures come after events in the current seventh season, with Mike described as having “solved his last case in Virgin River, for now. ”
Who’s Expected to Return, and What This Means for the Ensemble
Despite the two exits, Smith indicated that the rest of Virgin River’s Season 7 series regulars are expected to return for virgin river season 8, which has been picked up. That expectation includes Ben Hollingsworth, whose character Brady is involved in a scary crash in the final seconds of the Season 7 finale.
Smith also said there are no promotions to series regular planned for Season 8. He specifically addressed two recurring performers—Teryl Rothery (Muriel) and John Allen Nelson (Everett, Mel’s biological father)—saying they will definitely be back and remain a big presence on the show.
Smith characterized the cast as relatively stable, noting there have been few departures overall and only one new series regular cast addition since he became showrunner after Season 4: Kandyse McClure as Kaia in Season 5.
How Season 7 Set Up Mike’s Exit
Mike, a police detective and a Marine friend of Jack’s (Martin Henderson), was introduced as a recurring character in Season 2, with Grazzini promoted to series regular at the start of Season 3. His romantic storyline with Brie (Zibby Allen) shifted significantly over the last two seasons.
After Mike proposed to Brie—one of the Season 6 finale cliffhangers—she rejected him early in Season 7. His attempts to rekindle the relationship during their search for Charmaine did not succeed, and Brie ultimately reunited with Brady.
Mike was last seen in the Season 7 finale getting close with a rebound relationship of his own: Victoria (Sara Canning), a visiting medical investigator who told Mike she had a crush on him years earlier during her time as a cop. Smith said Mike will likely be “on the back burner for a little while” until there is something new written for him, pointing to the show already having many ongoing relationships.
