Mel Schilling Shares Devastating Terminal Cancer Update — "My Light Is Starting to Fade"
Married At First Sight relationship expert Mel Schilling, 54, has shared a heartbreaking cancer update on Friday, March 13, 2026, revealing that her cancer has spread to her brain and that doctors can do nothing more to treat it. The announcement has sent waves of grief and support across the television communities of Australia, the UK, and beyond.
Mel Schilling's Full Cancer Journey
Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023 after a scan revealed a tumour she described as the size of a lemon. The tumour, which she nicknamed "Terry," was successfully removed and she was initially given the all clear. But during a routine scan in February 2024, doctors discovered small nodules in her lungs, confirming the cancer had spread.
Over the past two years while filming MAFS, she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, and was later told she was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specific to her gene type, due to start in March 2026. Her optimism soared that she might beat the disease.
Cancer Spreads to Her Brain — Doctors Say Nothing More Can Be Done
Over Christmas she began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. After many tests she was told the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team told her there was nothing further they could do.
Her oncology team told her there was nothing further they could do. "Hearing those words changes everything," she wrote in her Instagram post. "My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love. Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult and I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me."
She wrote: "I honestly don't know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people."
Mel Schilling's Final Message and Warning to Fans
She ended her message with a plea to her followers: "If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn't feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life." She shared a picture of herself standing with her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie, writing that these two beside her are her everything.
Channel 4, MAFS Australia, and John Aiken Step In
In February 2026, Mel had already announced her departure from MAFS Australia after 12 seasons, citing health challenges and a desire to prioritise time with her family.
Channel 4 confirmed that fellow MAFS Australia expert John Aiken will step in to replace Schilling for the remainder of the UK series, which is currently being filmed. The broadcaster said Mel had become a hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family, with her wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness shining through across five series of MAFS UK and 12 series of MAFS Australia.
Network Nine described Schilling as family and praised her strength and openness in facing life's hardest moments.
