Nancy Guthrie Update — Day 41: Dedicated Task Force Formed, Tips Tapering, Megyn Kelly Raises Today Show Concern
Nancy Guthrie Update

Friday marks 41 days since Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona. No arrest has been made and no confirmed sighting has emerged, but the investigation has entered a new and more focused phase with a dedicated task force now working the case full time.

Dedicated Task Force Now Working Nancy Guthrie Case Full Time

A task force has been formed specifically to focus on the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Five Pima County Sheriff's Department officers and several FBI agents are now working together full-time on the case. The formation of the task force signals that authorities are treating this as an active, evolving investigation rather than a case going cold.

Sheriff Chris Nanos told NBC News he still believes investigators are making progress, saying they have a lot of intel and a lot of leads, and that now it is time to go to work.

FBI Tip Line Has Tapered — But Investigators Say That Is Normal

The FBI confirmed that tips related to the Nancy Guthrie case have tapered after an initial surge of tens of thousands of calls in the early weeks. Investigators continue urging anyone with information to call the tip line.

CNN's senior law enforcement analyst Josh Campbell noted that being overwhelmed with tips that go nowhere can actually slow investigators down, and that a tapering of false leads could allow the task force to focus more sharply on viable intelligence.

Megyn Kelly Raises Bombshell 2013 Today Show Bedroom Theory

Megyn Kelly published a YouTube video on March 11 highlighting a 2013 Today show segment in which Nancy Guthrie demonstrated how to make a bed — with her Tucson bedroom clearly visible on camera. Kelly raised the theory that the segment may have given the abductor an interior blueprint of the home before ever setting foot inside.

Kelly said that having worked briefly at the Today show herself, the network leans on its hosts to overshare — and tied that culture of openness directly to the vulnerability it may have created for Nancy.

Hearing Aids May Still Hold Location Data

Digital forensics expert Heather Barnhart explained that Nancy's phone is tied to both her hearing aids and her pacemaker. While the phone was left behind at the home, a database on the device may still allow investigators to pinpoint her last known location — but only if the phone and hearing aids were paired at the time of the abduction.

Barnhart also noted that Nancy may have been wearing a second pair of hearing aids at the time she was taken, and that if those had a Find My-style feature connected to the smartphone app, investigators may be able to trace their last known location before the batteries died.

Ex-FBI Agent Warns of Next Potential Victim

Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer issued a stark warning this week, saying there is at least one kidnapper and a potential murderer on the streets, and raising the concern that this individual could strike again. She called on the Pima County Sheriff's Department to hold a press conference sharing any additional vehicle descriptions or time parameters so the public can help.

Coffindaffer said her best assessment of how the case gets solved is someone coming forward who knows the suspect — a girlfriend who gets angry, a family member who finds a moral compass, or someone who wants the $1.2 million total reward money now available.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Pima County Sheriff's Department tip line at 520-351-4900 or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
