War Machine 2026: Alan Ritchson Netflix Movie Hits No. 1 With 39.3 Million Views, War Machine 2 Already Teased
The Alan Ritchson Netflix movie War Machine (2026) has exploded onto the platform since its March 6 release, claiming the No. 1 spot on Netflix globally and generating massive demand for a War Machine 2 sequel. The sci-fi action thriller is already being called one of the streamer's biggest hits of the year.
War Machine Netflix: Plot, Cast, and What to Know
War Machine follows a combat engineer who must lead his unit in a fight against a giant otherworldly killing machine during the final stage of Army Ranger training. The film starts as a military training drama before pivoting sharply into alien-robot survival territory roughly a third of the way through.
Alan Ritchson plays the lead character known only as 81, a man wrestling with grief over his brother's death who enters Ranger Academy to complete his brother's dream. When the recruits find a robot in the woods, they must survive and warn others about the new threat.
War Machine was directed and co-written by Patrick Hughes, and released theatrically in Australia on February 12, 2026, before landing on Netflix on March 6.
War Machine Cast Lineup
The War Machine cast includes Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber. Quaid and Morales appear as commanding officers at the Ranger Academy but have limited screen time in what is firmly Ritchson's showcase.
Ritchson described the shoot as the most physically demanding of his career, telling The Hollywood Reporter he doubted his own ability to finish. He and director Hughes marked the end of production by getting matching tattoos featuring one of the film's early logos.
War Machine Netflix Viewership Numbers Are Massive
War Machine debuted at No. 1 on Netflix's Top 10 English films, pulling 39.3 million views in its opening days — Netflix's second-biggest debut of 2026, trailing only Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's The Rip, which earned 41.6 million views.
The film trended at the top of Netflix across the US, England, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Australia, Canada, France, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, and more than 25 additional nations.
Why War Machine Skipped a Theatrical Release
The original plan was for a full theater rollout. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Erin Westerman explained that when the sales team began conversations with international buyers, the streaming market was so active that Lionsgate, producing partner Todd Lieberman, and Ritchson himself agreed Netflix was the better path.
The film received generally positive reviews, with critics praising it as a fun, old-school throwback action movie despite its familiar and formulaic storyline. War Machine holds an 81% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 70% audience score, with praise centered on the film's commitment to practical, on-location shooting.
War Machine 2: Is a Sequel Coming?
The War Machine 2 conversation is already underway. In a recent interview, Ritchson stated bluntly about a sequel: "It's already done. We're already ready to shoot." Hughes added that if the opportunity came, he would know exactly where to take the story.
Ritchson went further, promising War Machine 2 will be "sick" while optimistically teasing the potential for eight total sequels. Netflix has not officially greenlit War Machine 2, but with viewership numbers this strong, an announcement may only be a matter of time.
