The Washington Commanders made a significant move in NFL free agency Thursday, signing running back Rachaad White to a one-year contract. The deal fills a critical need in Washington's backfield just one day after running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. departed to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rachaad White Brings Veteran Experience to Washington Commanders

White, 27, just completed his rookie contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2025, he appeared in all 17 games with eight starts, rushing for 572 yards with four touchdowns and catching 40 passes for 218 yards.

Over the course of his career, White has appeared in 67 games while making 48 starts, recording 2,656 rushing yards, 1,450 receiving yards, and a combined 25 touchdowns since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2022.

His best NFL season came in 2023, when he totaled over 1,500 scrimmage yards and ranked among the top running backs in the league in yardage that year.

Commanders Backfield Takes Shape With Rachaad White Addition

White joins Jacory Croskey-Merritt atop Washington's wide-open backfield. Croskey-Merritt, a 2025 seventh-round pick, compiled 805 rushing yards and eight scores across 175 carries and 17 regular-season appearances as a rookie.

The pairing creates a complementary duo in Washington. Croskey-Merritt brings the explosive rushing upside while Rachaad White slots in as the polished pass-catching option out of the backfield, a role he has excelled in throughout his NFL career.

White only has a 3.9 yards per carry average in his NFL career, but unlike Croskey-Merritt, he is a strong receiving back, averaging 3.1 catches per game across his career. That will be of great use to Jayden Daniels.

Arizona State Reunion Drives Washington Commanders Decision

The personal connection between Rachaad White and Washington's franchise quarterback played a clear role in this signing. White will now reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels, his college teammate at Arizona State. The two overlapped with the Sun Devils from 2020–21.

That familiarity could translate quickly on the field. White already understands Daniels' tendencies, timing, and playmaking instincts, giving Washington a built-in chemistry advantage heading into the 2026 season.

Washington Commanders Still Building Roster in Free Agency

The Rachaad White signing is part of a broader aggressive push by the Washington Commanders this offseason. General manager Adam Peters made a giant splash by signing edge rusher Odafe Oweh to a four-year, $100 million contract to solidify the defensive line, while also adding Amik Robertson in the secondary and bringing back defensive tackle Tim Settle on a three-year deal.

The Commanders will remain a candidate to add to the backfield in free agency and through April's draft, but White has found a landing spot that could boost his fantasy prospects, especially in PPR formats, for the 2026 season.

Washington appears determined to surround Jayden Daniels with every weapon possible heading into what could be a defining year for the young franchise.
