Rivian R2 Officially Unveiled at SXSW: Deliveries Start This Spring at $57,990
Rivian pulled the curtain back on the full R2 lineup Thursday morning at SXSW in Austin, revealing pricing, specs, and a production timeline for the midsize electric SUV the company has staked its financial future on. Specs leaked a day early — Ars Technica accidentally published details before pulling the post — but the official reveal still drew significant attention. Deliveries begin this spring.
R2 Launch Pricing and Specs
The first R2 to reach customers is the most expensive one. The R2 Performance with Launch Package starts at $57,990 and features a dual-motor AWD setup producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, with a 0-60 mph time as quick as 3.6 seconds and an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles. Fast charging from 10% to 80% takes 29 minutes.
The Launch Package adds Rivian's Autonomy+ hands-free driving system for life — no subscription required — along with a special Launch Green color option, a Rivian Green key fob, and a standard tow package rated up to 4,400 pounds. Twenty-one-inch wheels, semi-active suspension, and a 975-watt nine-speaker audio system round out the top-spec package.
The R2 is meaningfully smaller than its predecessors. At 185.9 inches long, it is a full 2.5 feet shorter than the R1S, sits on a 115.9-inch wheelbase, and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds less. Ground clearance stands at 9.6 inches, with 79.4 cubic feet of total cargo volume behind the front seats.
Full Trim Lineup and Rollout Schedule
The R2 Premium follows in late 2026 at $53,990, with 450 horsepower, a 4.6-second 0-60 mph time, and the same 330-mile range. The R2 Standard arrives in the first half of 2027 starting at $48,490 — rear-wheel drive, 350 horsepower, and an estimated 345 miles of range. A final Standard variant targeting around $45,000 with 275-plus miles of range is slated for late 2027.
Every trim ships with a native NACS port for Tesla Supercharger access. All R2 models also include standard advanced driver-assistance features, with Autonomy+ — Rivian's hands-free highway system — available as a $2,500 one-time purchase or $49.99 monthly.
One hardware caveat worth noting: Rivian's third-generation autonomy computer, which the company says enables future "personal L4" self-driving capability, won't appear in the spring Launch Package vehicles — it arrives in R2 models produced in late 2026. Some tech-focused buyers may factor that into their purchase timing.
The Make-or-Break Moment for Rivian
The stakes could not be clearer. Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe has promised investors the R2 will be a turning point for the company's profits and sales. Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco called it "the key transition vehicle for Rivian to transform into a scaled auto manufacturer."
Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 units shipped in 2026 — which analysts have described as one of the fastest EV launches in U.S. history, a pace only the Tesla Model Y has previously achieved. Volume production at its Normal, Illinois plant is set to begin mid-2026.
Headwinds are real. The $7,500 federal EV tax credit has expired, and tariff costs are adding pressure — all while U.S. EV demand remains softer than automakers projected. Barclays flagged demand uncertainty in an August investor note, and the concern hasn't fully dissipated.
SXSW Test Rides Begin Friday
Starting March 13, Rivian's Electric Joyride at the 800 Block of Congress in Austin will offer public rides in the production R2 through a custom off-road course, running daily through March 18. No reservation is required — walk-up access is available.
Reservations are open now with a $100 refundable deposit, and the online configurator is expected to launch in the coming months.
