Watkins Header Gives Aston Villa 1-0 Lead Over LOSC in Europa League Round of 16 First Leg
Ollie Watkins delivered when it mattered. A second-half header at the Stade Pierre Mauroy handed Aston Villa a narrow but valuable first-leg advantage over LOSC Lille in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 — setting up a compelling second leg at Villa Park next week.
Watkins the Difference at Pierre-Mauroy
Lille controlled the ball well in the first half, but possession didn't equate to many clear-cut chances for the hosts in the opening exchanges, and it was Aston Villa who looked the more dangerous side throughout.
Jadon Sancho played Morgan Rogers into the right side of the penalty area in the 20th minute, but his ball across the face of goal drifted wide. Onana then got away down the left and sent over a low pass which was just cut out by Aïssa Mandi as Watkins looked to tap home. The goal was coming.
It arrived in the second half — Watkins headed a through ball into the net to give Villa the lead, his sixth goal contribution in this Europa League campaign. The finish was characteristically direct. The striker has now scored five and assisted twice in the competition this season.
Lille pushed hard to level in the final minutes. In the closing stages, the French side moved its lines forward and pressed in the opponent's half, but Villa dropped into a five-man defensive block that closed down spaces near the box, making things difficult for the hosts to create a clear chance. The clean sheet held.
Villa's European Form vs. Domestic Struggles
The result carries extra weight given the context of Villa's domestic run. Unai Emery's men arrived in northern France having lost three of their last four Premier League matches, including a 1-4 defeat to Chelsea just eight days earlier. Europe has been a different story entirely.
Villa finished second behind Lyon in the Europa League league phase with seven wins — a campaign that showed Emery's squad reserves a sharper version of itself for continental nights. Lille, meanwhile, entered the tie on the back of a 1-1 Ligue 1 draw with Lorient and carrying nerves after a difficult start to the calendar year.
Captain John McGinn returned to contention for the first leg, a timely boost for a midfield that has looked thin at times in league play. His presence steadied Villa through the periods when Lille built pressure.
Second Leg at Villa Park on March 19
The second leg takes place at Villa Park on March 19, with Villa holding the narrow advantage heading home. A 1-0 lead is far from comfortable — one Lille goal flips the tie, and the French side have history here. In the 2023-24 UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-finals, Lille beat Villa 2-1 at Pierre-Mauroy before the tie was eventually decided on penalties.
Emery will know that better than anyone. Thursday's defensive discipline was reassuring. Whether Villa can protect a lead at home — something they have struggled with in the Premier League this year — is the question that shapes their entire European run.
The quarterfinals are one result away. Watkins has given them the foothold to get there.
