Mel Schilling Says 'My Light Is Starting to Fade' as Cancer Spreads to Brain — MAFS Departing After 12 Years
Married at First Sight relationship expert Mel Schilling revealed Thursday that her cancer has spread to her brain and that her oncology team has told her there is nothing more they can do. In a raw, unflinching Instagram post, the 54-year-old said she does not know how long she has left — but she is still fighting.
Cancer Spreads to Brain After Clinical Trial Window Closes
The update marks a devastating turn in a battle that had moments of real hope. Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023 after a tumour described as "the size of a lemon" was discovered during a scan, successfully removed, and she was initially given the all-clear.
It didn't hold. In late February 2024, a routine scan found small nodules in her lungs — the cancer had metastasised. Over the two years that followed, she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to film MAFS, and was then told she was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specific to her gene type, due to start in March 2026.
That trial never happened. Over Christmas, she began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. Tests confirmed the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team told her there is nothing further they can do.
'I Honestly Don't Know How Long I Have Left'
Her statement did not soften the reality. "Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult and I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me," she wrote. "I honestly don't know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people."
"Hearing those words changes everything," she added. "So that's where I am now. My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love."
She ended the post with a photo of herself alongside her husband Gareth and their daughter Madison. "If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn't feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life."
John Aiken Steps In for MAFS UK Filming
Schilling is stepping down from MAFS after 12 seasons in Australia and five in the UK. Channel 4 confirmed that fellow MAFS Australia expert John Aiken — a personal friend — will step in for the remainder of the current UK series, which is currently in production.
A Channel 4 spokesperson said: "MAFS UK is currently filming and, with Mel's blessing, her good friend and fellow MAFS Australia expert, John Aiken, has done us the great favour of stepping in for her for this series." The UK series is scheduled to return this September.
Channel 4 went further. "Her wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness shine through, and these qualities mean that everyone involved in MAFS — from the producers and contributors, to the viewers — love and respect her as much as we do."
Outpouring From Colleagues and Fans
The response online was immediate. Broadcaster Ashley James wrote: "OH Mel — this has broken my heart for you and your family and everyone who loves you. I feel so lucky to have met you and to have felt your love." Actor Nicola Thorp added: "Oh Mel. I am so sorry to hear this. You are loved by more people and in more ways than you could possibly ever know."
Channel Nine's Head of Content Adrian Swift praised her legacy, saying she "helped define the show in the early days and always brought her incredible insight and empathy to both the matching process and to the commitment ceremony couch."
Schilling has been based in the UK with her family for several years. She leaves the franchise having appeared in more combined MAFS seasons than any other expert on either production.
