Draper Stuns Djokovic in Indian Wells Thriller; Zverev, Sinner, Alcaraz All in Quarterfinals
Jack Draper delivered the match of the tournament Wednesday night at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in a three-set epic that produced a 26-shot rally, a near-collapse serving for the match, and one of the most significant wins of the 24-year-old's career. The quarterfinal draw is now set — and it is loaded.
Draper vs. Djokovic: How It Went Down
Draper came back from a first-set deficit to defeat Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in two hours and 37 minutes of baseline warfare — his first career win over the 38-year-old Serbian great and his third victory against a top-three player.
The defining moment arrived early in the deciding set. At 30-all, Djokovic won a breathtaking 26-shot rally that earned a standing ovation from the crowd, setting the tone for a final set that only grew more intense with each game. Djokovic visibly labored through the extended exchanges — leaning on his racquet between points — but refused to yield.
He nearly stole it late. Draper failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the third set. Djokovic earned triple break point and converted, clawing back to force a tiebreak. Draper held his nerve, closing it out on his first match point.
"I came out here tonight and I won that match through determination and trying to problem solve and do my best," Draper said courtside. "I'm proud of the way I regrouped. I haven't been playing on the Tour in a long time, so to put away guys who are top players, it's something that comes with confidence."
The win lands with added weight given the context. It was only Draper's second ATP Tour event since the US Open last August, after eight months away from the tour managing an arm injury. He is now two wins from defending a Masters 1000 title.
Djokovic departs California with a 7-2 season record, having reached the Australian Open final earlier this year before falling to Carlos Alcaraz. He had been chasing his tenth Indian Wells quarterfinal — a milestone only Federer and Nadal have achieved.
Zverev Cruises, Sinner and Alcaraz Advance
While Draper was battling Djokovic on the night court, the day session produced three more clinical performances. Zverev delivered a measured straight-sets win over Frances Tiafoe, finishing with 13 aces and winning 78% of first-serve points. The decisive break in the second set came at 3-3, when Zverev produced a drop-shot-smash combination to earn the crucial advantage. He held every service game in the match.
Sinner edged past João Fonseca in a high-quality two-tiebreak affair, recording his 97th Masters 1000 win in the process. Alcaraz had already booked his spot in the quarterfinals with a straight-sets dismissal of Casper Ruud.
Meanwhile, Arthur Fils advanced with a 6-3, 7-6(9) win over Felix Auger-Aliassime after trailing 0-5 in the second-set tiebreak — the comeback of the day by a wide margin.
Indian Wells Quarterfinal Schedule Thursday
The quarterfinals begin Thursday at 11 a.m. local time (2 p.m. ET) with Zverev against Fils on Stadium 2, followed by Draper facing Daniil Medvedev. On Stadium 1, Sinner takes on American 20-year-old Learner Tien, with the final match of the day featuring Alcaraz against Cameron Norrie.
Zverev leads Fils 4-2 in their head-to-head. Medvedev holds a 1-0 edge over Draper, their only meeting coming in Rome two years ago. The winner's share for the 2026 BNP Paribas Open is $1,151,380.
Two Brits — Draper and Norrie — are in the last eight. The defending champion is still standing. Thursday will tell us who joins him in the semifinals.
