Jonathan Allen Joins Bengals After Vikings Release
The Cincinnati Bengals have secured a notable addition to their defensive lineup by signing Jonathan Allen. This former standout defensive tackle from the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders inked a two-year contract valued at up to $28 million, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. Allen’s prior experience gives the Bengals a skilled player to enhance their defensive strength.
Jonathan Allen’s Career Overview
Jonathan Allen, who was the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by Washington, has established himself as a two-time Pro Bowler. During his last season with the Vikings, he started all 17 games, showcasing his durability and commitment. He ended the season with impressive statistics, including:
- 68 tackles
- 11 quarterback hits
- 7 tackles for loss
- 3.5 sacks
Vikings Release and Transition to Bengals
This week, as free agency began, Allen was released by Minnesota. His previous contract with the Vikings was a three-year deal worth $51 million. However, he concluded the season with a career-low PFF grade of 53.2 and celebrated his 31st birthday in January. While not viewed as a long-term solution, his presence is expected to impact the Bengals significantly.
Of note, last season he registered 34 pressures, a figure that would have ranked third among the Bengals’ defensive roster. The next closest player, B.J. Hill, managed only 29 pressures.
Impact on the Bengals’ Draft Plans
By signing Allen, the Bengals may also be alleviating the immediate need to draft a defensive tackle with their 10th pick. This strategic move allows them to consider the best player available, rather than feeling compelled to address specific positional needs with their high draft capital.
