Jack Draper Beats Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in Indian Wells 2026 Epic to Defend Title
Jack Draper is still the Indian Wells champion. The 24-year-old Briton came back from a first-set deficit Wednesday night to defeat Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in one of the best matches of the 2026 season — two hours and 37 minutes of baseline warfare that ended with Draper's first career win over the 38-year-old Serbian great. The defending champion is through to the quarterfinals. Djokovic is on a plane home.
It was only Draper's second ATP Tour event since the US Open last August.
The Match: A 26-Shot Rally, a Blown Serve, and a Tie-Break for the Ages
Djokovic broke Draper late in the opening set and closed it out with the controlled efficiency that has defined his entire career. The first set felt routine. The second set did not.
The highlight came in the opening game of the decider at 30-all — Djokovic won a breathtaking 26-shot rally that earned a standing ovation from the crowd. The exchange set the tone for a final set that only intensified with every game. Both men were pushed to their physical limits, with Djokovic visibly struggling to recover his breath between points as the rallies stretched longer.
Draper failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the decider — Djokovic earned triple break point and converted, clawing back to force a tie-break. The crowd, which had been firmly behind the young Briton, held its breath.
The players were locked at 5-5 in the tie-break when Draper produced a courageous backhand to earn match point — and on the first chance, he closed it out.
What Draper Said on Court
The emotion was immediate and unfiltered. "I came out here tonight and I won that match through determination and trying to problem solve and do my best and have a great attitude," Draper said. "I'm proud of the way I regrouped. I haven't been playing on the Tour in a long time, so to put away guys who are top players, it's something that comes with confidence."
He did not stop there. "For me to be on court again these last few weeks has been emotional for me and I'm really grateful for it. To come out here against Novak, for me the greatest tennis player there is, and someone I've been admiring and watching since I was a little kid. To do that, I'm just incredibly proud of myself."
Where This Win Sits in Draper's Career
It was Draper's third career win against a top-three player — his previous victories over that threshold coming against Carlos Alcaraz at the HSBC Championships in 2024 and here at Indian Wells in 2025. He improved to 1-1 in his head-to-head with Djokovic. Their only previous meeting was at Wimbledon in 2021, when Draper was ranked outside the top 200.
The win lands differently given the circumstances. Draper has barely competed since reaching the US Open final last August, nursing an injury that kept him off the Tour for the better part of six months. He arrived in Indian Wells under-cooked by any standard metric — and is now two wins from defending a Masters 1000 title.
Djokovic Exits With a 7-2 Season Record — and Plenty Left
Djokovic departs California with a 7-2 season record, having reached the Australian Open final earlier this year before falling to Alcaraz. He was chasing his tenth Indian Wells quarterfinal — a feat only Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have achieved, with 13 and 12 respectively. He will have to wait.
At 38, the pursuit of those benchmarks grows narrower each tournament. Wednesday's loss does not close the door on anything. It simply keeps the count where it is.
What Comes Next at Indian Wells 2026
Draper's quarterfinal opponent is Daniil Medvedev, who demolished American Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4. The two have met once before — Medvedev won in Rome two years ago. The Dubai champion has not dropped more than four games in a set since that title run began, arriving in Indian Wells as the sharpest player in the draw on current form.
Cam Norrie also advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Rinky Hijikata, setting up a meeting with world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. Two Brits in the Indian Wells quarterfinals — and the defending champion still standing.
Draper versus Medvedev is scheduled for Friday.
