Former Overwatch Lead Alleges Revenue Ultimatum Threatened 1,000 Developer Jobs
In a revealing interview, former Overwatch lead Jeff Kaplan disclosed significant pressures faced during his tenure at Blizzard Entertainment. He alleged that financial demands linked to the Overwatch League led to an ultimatum that threatened 1,000 developer jobs.
Revenue Ultimatum and Developer Job Threats
Kaplan stated that he was pressured by former Blizzard CFO, Dennis Durkin, to ensure Overwatch met specific revenue targets. Failure to achieve these goals would result in substantial layoffs within the development team. Kaplan described this ultimatum as a career-defining moment, expressing deep dissatisfaction with the situation.
Impact of the Overwatch League
According to Kaplan, the Overwatch League imposed additional strains beyond the usual challenges faced in live service game development. The league demanded substantial investment, affecting the game’s features and overall direction. Kaplan indicated that resources were diverted to elements such as Twitch integration and spectator cameras, which were part of the initial league vision.
- Overwatch League oversold to investors as an “industry-changing” event
- Initial business model focused on in-person events and merchandise sales
- Connectivity challenges undermined the feasibility of large-scale events
Kaplan also noted that expectations for merchandise revenue were unrealistic, comparing them to NFL earnings. As a result, plans for Overwatch quickly fell apart, forcing the team to look to the game itself for revenue generation.
Pressure on Development
Kaplan explained how these financial pressures shifted focus away from the game’s creative elements. The demands to ship Overwatch 2 intensified, leading to the loss of resources dedicated to live events, new heroes, and updates.
Reflecting on his career, Kaplan regretted the eventual shift in Blizzard’s culture. He had envisioned retirement there, considering it a significant part of his identity. With Durkin no longer at the company, Kaplan has since transitioned to a new venture.
New Beginnings: Kintsugiyama
Now, Kaplan is part of an independent studio called Kintsugiyama, which is developing a new open-world survival game titled The Legend of California. The game is slated for Early Access release later this year, marking a new chapter for Kaplan outside Blizzard’s shadow.
