Epic Raises Fortnite V-Bucks Prices to Offset Costs
Epic Games has announced a significant increase in the price of V-Bucks, the in-game currency for Fortnite. This move, stated to help “pay the bills,” comes amid rising operational costs for the popular game.
Details of the Price Increase on Fortnite V-Bucks
Effective March 19, the changes will affect the amount of V-Bucks players receive with various paid packs. The new pricing structure is as follows:
- $8.99 pack – 800 V-Bucks (previously 1,000 V-Bucks)
- $22.99 pack – 2,400 V-Bucks (previously 2,800 V-Bucks)
- $36.99 pack – 4,500 V-Bucks (previously 5,000 V-Bucks)
- $89.99 pack – 12,500 V-Bucks (previously 13,500 V-Bucks)
- Exact amount pack – $0.99 for 50 V-Bucks (previously $0.49 for 50)
Changes to Battle Pass Rewards
The price of the Battle Pass has been reduced to 800 V-Bucks from 1,000. However, players will now only earn 800 V-Bucks upon completing the Battle Pass, down from 1,000. The 500 Bonus Rewards previously offered will no longer be available.
Additional Adjustments to Battle Passes
Epic has also made adjustments to other Battle Pass offerings:
- OG Pass – 800 V-Bucks (was 1,000)
- Music Pass – 1,200 V-Bucks (was 1,400)
- Lego Pass – 1,200 V-Bucks (was 1,400)
Fortnite Crew members will see a decrease in their monthly rewards as well, receiving 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000.
Impacts on Gift Cards and Revenues
Despite these changes, Epic Games assures players that existing V-Bucks gift cards will maintain their original redeemable value. Additionally, last month it was reported that PC players spent approximately $1.16 billion on the Epic Games Store in the preceding year. Overall, Statista estimates suggest that Epic Games generated $6.21 billion in gross revenue for the same period.
However, concerns about profitability have been raised. General manager Steve Allison mentioned that the Epic Games Store is only “marginally profitable,” primarily due to low profit margins on third-party games and the costs associated with their free game promotions.
The adjustments to Fortnite’s V-Bucks pricing reflect broader economic challenges faced by gaming companies and highlight Epic’s efforts to manage its financial responsibilities.
