The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that a supercell caused multiple tornadoes to touch down across Kankakee County and parts of Indiana on Tuesday.
Details of the Tornadoes
The tornadoes, officially linked to a supercell moving from Pontiac, Illinois to Indiana, have been assessed to include at least two significant tornadoes near Aroma Park. Although initial assessments mentioned four, the NWS is still evaluating the total count.
One of the tornadoes wreaked havoc for almost 90 minutes, from 6:18 PM to 7:39 PM, tracking approximately 40 miles. It began near Aroma Park and concluded near De Motte, Indiana. The strength of this tornado was categorized as EF-3, with maximum wind speeds reaching 115 MPH.
Impact and Casualties
In Kankakee County, nine individuals sustained injuries, though there were no fatalities reported. Unfortunately, two casualties were recorded in Lake Village, Indiana.
Power outages also plagued the region, with numerous downed power lines and uprooted trees contributing to the chaos. An emergency declaration has been filed by Kankakee County to request state assistance.
