Desmond Bane

Desmond Bane delivered the star performance Orlando paid four first-round picks to acquire. The forward posted 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting Friday night at Target Center, leading the Magic to a dominant 119-92 road win over the Minnesota Timberwolves and justifying every bit of the blockbuster trade Orlando made last summer.

Bane Was Unstoppable in Minnesota

He came in attacking and never let up. Bane went 10-of-12 on two-point attempts — 83.3% inside the arc — and converted all 10 of his free throw attempts, finishing with a 70.1% true shooting mark. He added four assists, three rebounds, and a steal in a performance that showcased every dimension of his game.

Paolo Banchero backed him up with a double-double: 25 points and 15 rebounds on 10-of-18 shooting. Tristan da Silva chipped in 11 points and four assists off a balanced bench. Orlando outscored Minnesota 60-38 in the paint, grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, and held a double-digit lead for most of the second half.

Minnesota's Offense Couldn't Keep Up

Anthony Edwards did what he could. The Wolves' star put up 34 points on 44.4% shooting with five threes and 13 free throw attempts — his usual package. Nobody else matched that output. Jaden McDaniels went scoreless on nine attempts. Julius Randle contributed 14 points but committed four turnovers.

The Timberwolves shot just 35.7% from the field and 22.5% from three — brutal shooting nights from both starting guards. Minnesota turned the ball over 12 times, giving Orlando 19 points off turnovers. The Magic's lead swelled to 27 at its peak.

Bane's Journey in Orlando

The trade that sent him from Memphis last June — four unprotected first-rounders and a pick swap from Orlando — was met with skepticism. Bane got off to a rocky start in Orlando, averaging just 13.9 points in 29 minutes through early November while shooting 28.6% from three. The Magic sat 3-5 and ranked 25th offensively. Critics were already sharpening their knives.

He preached patience. Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley vouched for him early: "He's a winner. He's going to find a way to win no matter what."

The patience paid off. Through 63 games this season, Bane is averaging 20.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists — north of where he was in Memphis and climbing. Friday's 30-point outburst is another data point in what has become a strong second half of his first Orlando season.

Where the Wolves Stand

Minnesota has now lost back-to-back games, falling to the Lakers on Monday before getting blown out by Orlando. The Timberwolves play at the Clippers tonight — a game already in progress — and face Golden State Saturday before a critical road matchup at Oklahoma City on Sunday. The Western Conference playoff seeding race gives them no room for extended slides.

Orlando, meanwhile, moves to 8th in the Eastern Conference, locked in a tight Play-In race. The Magic are a half-game behind Miami and 1.5 games out of sixth. Bane's resurgence over the final stretch of the regular season could be the difference between hosting a Play-In game and avoiding it altogether.
