2026 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells — Alcaraz Demolishes Ruud, Norrie Into Quarterfinals

2026 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells — Alcaraz Demolishes Ruud, Norrie Into Quarterfinals
Alcaraz Demolishes

Carlos Alcaraz is on a mission in the California desert. The world No. 1 crushed Casper Ruud in straight sets Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive year — and his reward is Cameron Norrie, playing the best tennis of his career and riding a wave nobody saw coming.

Alcaraz Beats Ruud — The Match Was Over Early

Alcaraz produced a composed and entertaining display to beat Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2) in 91 minutes, moving to 6-1 in their ATP head-to-head rivalry. He also became the first player to reach five Indian Wells quarterfinals before the age of 23.

The first set was over almost immediately. Alcaraz moved Ruud relentlessly from corner to corner, deploying daring lobs and sweeping groundstrokes that the Norwegian had no answer for. Ruud improved in the second set but Alcaraz held firm, stretching his unbeaten run to 15 matches in 2026 — having won the Australian Open in January before adding the ATP 500 title in Doha.

Norrie Is Flying — And He Gets Alcaraz Next

Earlier Wednesday, Norrie defeated Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 6-2 to continue his remarkable Indian Wells form. The 30-year-old is through to his fifth ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal and his fourth at this specific tournament.

Norrie said afterward: "This week I've felt I've played some of the best tennis of my life, but let's just keep enjoying it, keep going." He beat No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round without dropping a set — dominant tennis from a player who has found a clean rhythm in the desert. Significantly, Norrie beat Alcaraz in the second round of the Paris Masters recently — the last player other than Sinner to beat the Spaniard.

Djokovic vs. Draper — In Progress Now

The other marquee Wednesday night matchup is currently underway. Live scores show Novak Djokovic leads Jack Draper one set to none (6-4), with Draper leading the second set 5-4. Draper is the defending champion. The winner faces one of the bracket's toughest paths through to the final.

Men's Quarterfinal Lineup

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Cameron Norrie — the marquee quarterfinal after Norrie's run through de Minaur and Hijikata.

Jannik Sinner also advanced Wednesday. The full quarterfinal picture will be set by the time Djokovic-Draper concludes tonight.

Women's Draw: Rybakina Advances

On the women's side, Elena Rybakina beat Sonay Kartal in straight sets to advance — continuing her dominant run through the bottom half of the draw. Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula are still alive, with the women's quarterfinals beginning Thursday.

The BNP Paribas Open runs through Sunday, March 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Coverage is live on Sky Sports in the UK and Tennis Channel in the United States.
