The film that couldn't find a distributor is now sitting in Netflix's top three. Nuremberg — Russell Crowe and Rami Malek's post-WWII psychological duel — arrived on the platform March 7 and has barely moved from the upper tier of the charts since. Here is everything you need to know.

What the Film Is About

The Allies, led by unyielding chief prosecutor Robert H. Jackson, must ensure high-ranking Nazi officials answer for the Holocaust in the trial of the century — while U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, revealing the sobering truth that ordinary men commit extraordinary evil.

The film opens in the immediate aftermath of Nazi Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945, and traces the long road to the International Military Tribunal — the unprecedented legal body created to prosecute top Nazi officials. What begins as a professional assignment for Kelley slowly takes on a more unsettling character when he finds himself locked in a complex psychological battle with Göring, who remains civil and occasionally even charming, but operates with calculated purpose.

The Cast

Nuremberg was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, based on the 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai. The full cast stars Russell Crowe as Göring, Rami Malek as Douglas Kelley, Michael Shannon as Robert H. Jackson, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O'Brien, Colin Hanks, Wrenn Schmidt, Richard E. Grant, and Lydia Peckham.

Crowe's Performance Is the Film's Engine

The critical split is consistent: mixed on the film, nearly unanimous on Crowe. Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: "Driven by a commanding performance from Russell Crowe, Nuremberg is a handsomely crafted historical drama, but its measured pacing and emotional restraint keep it from fully realizing the complexity of its subject." The film holds a 71% critic score but a 95% verified audience score.

Crowe's Göring captures the charisma and arrogance of a man desperate to justify his actions. In one striking exchange, Göring explains why Hitler inspired such fervent loyalty: "He made us feel German again. I have seen Germany crushed. Here comes a man who says, 'We can reclaim our former glory.' Would you not follow a man like this?"

The Road to Netflix

Nuremberg had a long road to theaters — it struggled to find distribution before Sony Pictures Classics finally released it in November 2025, where it wowed both critics and audiences and was compared to Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. It grossed $45 million globally against a production budget of around $10 million before arriving on Netflix on March 7 under Sony and Netflix's "Pay-1" licensing agreement.

Netflix Performance

Nuremberg hit No. 3 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies in the United States on March 8 — its first day on the platform — and has held that position since, outperforming Jurassic World, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and several other titles. The only film currently above it in the charts is War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson.

Crowe has a packed 2026 ahead — he is currently filming the Highlander reboot with Henry Cavill and has another sci-fi adventure with Ethan Hawke titled The Weight awaiting distribution. Nuremberg is streaming now on Netflix. Runtime: 2 hours 28 minutes. Rated PG-13.
