Montreal won. The three points moved the Canadiens deeper into playoff position. Nobody cared about any of that — all eyes were on Cole Caufield doubled over on the bench at Bell Centre, shaking his head at the coaching staff and refusing to go back on the ice. The exhale came after the final buzzer.

What Happened to Caufield

It was Marc Denis on the RDS broadcast who raised the alarm, noting Caufield had not played since the 14th minute of the second period. Denis revealed that Caufield signaled and shook his head to say he was not available to return late in the second period, and that he had significant difficulty getting back to the locker room.

The good news arrived quickly. Head coach Martin St-Louis confirmed after the game that Caufield was not injured — he was simply sick, battling a bug that has been circulating in the Canadiens' locker room. St-Louis said Caufield is expected to travel to Ottawa on Wednesday for the back-to-back against the Senators.

Caufield has 37 goals and 64 points in 63 games this season — one goal away from setting a new career high. Losing him now, with the playoff push at its most critical, would be significant. An illness is infinitely preferable.

How Montreal Won Without Him

Oliver Kapanen scored what could end up being a $250,000 bonus goal, assisted by Ivan Demidov, to open the scoring. Phillip Danault doubled the lead when a fortunate bounce left him alone in front of Joseph Woll. When Caufield went down, Demidov was promoted to the first line alongside Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovský — and the team didn't miss a beat structurally.

William Nylander pulled one back for Toronto on the power play in the second period. Then Jake Evans scored into an empty net to seal it — Evans earning first-star honors with a game-high performance in faceoffs and defensive play. Jakub Dobeš was named third star, making the right saves at the right moments on only 18 Toronto shots.

Jacob Quillan, the Rookie Who Answered the Call

Toronto's Jacob Quillan was one of the names to watch in this lineup. The 22-year-old center went 1-of-8 in the faceoff dot — a rough night on draws — but his physical presence was felt. He logged three hits and kept himself relevant against an experienced Canadiens lineup that controlled most of the game.

Caufield's Status for Ottawa Tonight

Caufield's status remains up in the air until closer to game time Wednesday against the Senators. If he can't go, Alexander Texier would likely draw into the lineup. Patrik Laine, also on the Montreal roster, is not expected to play regardless of Caufield's availability.

The Senators game tips at 7:30 p.m. ET. Montreal is currently in a tight Atlantic Division wild card race — Ottawa has been a tough opponent for the Habs this season, making Caufield's availability more than just a health question. It's a standings question too. Meanwhile, the Ottawa-Montreal game is currently tied 2-2 in the final minute of regulation.
