NYT Connections #1005 — Thursday, March 12 Hints and Full Answers
NYT Connections

Today's Connections is puzzle number 1,005 — and it's sneakier than it looks. The Purple category in particular requires knowledge across three completely unrelated domains: breakfast cereals, national flags, and instruments that measure wind direction. Hints first. Answers at the bottom.

Today's 16 Words

CUCKOO CLOCK, SWING, STEP, SANDBOX, HOURGLASS, MEXICAN FLAG, METRONOME, WEATHER VANE, WINDSHIELD WIPER, BUNKER, SPIN, PENDULUM, DESERT, REFORMER, FROOT LOOPS, BARRE

Hints — No Spoilers Yet

Yellow (Easiest): Places where sand can be found. Think broadly — not just the obvious ones.

Green: Objects or things that move back and forth. Repetitive, rhythmic motion is the key.

Blue: Exercise classes that use a piece of apparatus. Each word is a specific class format.

Purple (Hardest): Items featuring birds. The connection cuts across wildly different categories — and at least one will catch you off guard.

The trap is obvious: SWING, STEP, SPIN, and BARRE all look like dance or exercise moves. Only three of them belong in Blue. SWING goes elsewhere entirely.

Today's Connections Answers

Yellow — PLACES WITH SAND: BUNKER, DESERT, HOURGLASS, SANDBOX

Green — THINGS THAT MOVE BACK AND FORTH: METRONOME, PENDULUM, SWING, WINDSHIELD WIPER

Blue — APPARATUS-BASED EXERCISE CLASSES: BARRE, REFORMER, SPIN, STEP

Purple — ITEMS FEATURING BIRDS: CUCKOO CLOCK, FROOT LOOPS, MEXICAN FLAG, WEATHER VANE

The Trap to Avoid

The Purple category is this puzzle's masterstroke. WEATHER VANE made the bird list because they typically feature a cockerel — though they can also depict dolphins and dragons. The world's largest weather vane has a ship on top. FROOT LOOPS features Toucan Sam. The MEXICAN FLAG carries an eagle. CUCKOO CLOCK — obvious once you see it, invisible until you do.

The Blue group also caused hesitation, specifically around which exercise class belonged where. SWING looked like it fit with SPIN, STEP, and BARRE — but it belongs in Green with the back-and-forth movers. Anyone who locked in SWING as a fitness class lost a guess.
