Arsenal Escape Leverkusen with 1-1 Draw in UCL Round of 16 First Leg
Arsenal's perfect Champions League record is over — but they leave Germany with a precious away goal. The Gunners conceded for the first time in the UEFA Champions League this season, going down to a Robert Andrich header, before rescuing a 1-1 draw in the 89th minute at BayArena on Wednesday. The second leg goes to the Emirates on March 17.
Andrich Header Breaks Arsenal's UCL Shutout
Arsenal trailed for the first time in the Champions League this season after conceding from a corner kick — a bitter irony for a side renowned for their own set-piece threat. Robert Andrich, captaining Leverkusen, powered home the header just seconds into the second half to send BayArena into life.
Not a lot of danger preceded the goal — nine shots total in the match, six for the hosts, but just one on target each heading into the second half. Arsenal held 55% of the ball but were unable to translate possession into genuine chances against a Leverkusen side set up to frustrate.
The 89th-Minute Rescue
Arsenal dug in late. The equalizer arrived in the 89th minute to level the aggregate score and fundamentally change the stakes of the second leg. The goal scorer's identity was not confirmed in immediate match reports, but the timing — with substitute Noni Madueke introduced specifically to change the game — underlined how close Mikel Arteta came to sending his side home with a first-leg deficit.
Bukayo Saka was Arsenal's most dangerous presence throughout, pressing and creating consistently before Madueke entered to push for the equalizer. Saka wore the captain's armband, with William Saliba returning to the back line alongside Gabriel Magalhaes after a spell on the sidelines.
Kofane Causes Problems, Discipline Frays
Christian Kofane started up front for Leverkusen in a lineup that also featured Alejandro Grimaldo, Ibrahim Maza, Martin Terrier, and Exequiel Palacios behind him. The young forward, in his first major knockout appearance, gave Arsenal's backline genuine problems — most notably winning the free kick that led to dangerous set-piece situations.
Kofane came up to take the ball away from Gabriel Magalhaes during one attacking sequence, announcing himself as a name Arsenal's defenders will need to study ahead of the second leg. Discipline was an issue for both sides. Leverkusen collected three yellow cards, including Andrich in the 58th minute — a booking that rules him out of the Emirates return. Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli and one other were also cautioned.
What's at Stake on March 17
The draw is ultimately a good result for Arsenal, even if the manner of conceding stings. The Gunners have the quadruple in their sights — they went through the Champions League league phase unbeaten, sit top of the Premier League, are in the League Cup final, and have a favorable FA Cup quarterfinal draw.
Leverkusen finished 16th in the league phase before reaching the knockouts via the play-offs, where they beat Olympiacos 2-0 on aggregate. Kasper Hjulmand's side have now shown they can hurt Arsenal — but Andrich's absence at the Emirates, combined with Arsenal's unbeaten home European record, shifts the balance firmly toward the Gunners.
The second leg at the Emirates Stadium kicks off on Tuesday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET, with coverage available on CBS Sports Golazo and TNT Sports in the UK. Arsenal need only a draw to advance to the quarterfinals. Leverkusen need a win.
