Syracuse Basketball Overhauls Staff, Including GM Alex Kline Departure

Syracuse basketball has undergone significant changes in its coaching staff, marking a new chapter for the program. The university announced the dismissal of head coach Adrian Autry, along with all of his assistant coaches and general manager Alex Kline.

Syracuse Basketball Staff Changes

The shakeup happened on a Wednesday, as confirmed by multiple sources. Athletic director John Wildhack communicated the decision to Autry after his three seasons at the helm. Following this, Autry informed his assistants, as detailed to Syracuse.com by the local media.

Departing Coaches and Staff

  • Head Coach: Adrian Autry
  • General Manager: Alex Kline
  • Assistant Coaches:
    • Allen Griffin
    • Brenden Straughn
    • Dan Engelstad
    • Pete Corasaniti

Each assistant received individual notifications about their termination early Wednesday morning. Deputy athletic director Torrey Ball conducted the meetings, that were not held as a group.

Background on Alex Kline

Kline joined Syracuse as the first general manager in the summer of 2024, coming from a scouting role with the New York Knicks. Prior to that, he worked for four years with the New Orleans Pelicans. This season marked the first time he had significant input in roster decisions, which included notable transfers such as guard Nate Kingz and center William Kyle.

Player Contributions

  • Nate Kingz: Averaged 11.8 points per game and recorded a 37% shooting rate from three-point range, transferring from Oregon State.
  • William Kyle: Led the ACC in blocked shots after joining from UCLA.
  • Naithan George: A transfer from Georgia Tech who scored 11 points per game but faced challenges with turnovers.

Autry’s Assistants

Most of Autry’s coaching staff had been with him throughout his tenure. Griffin, a Syracuse alumnus, had been with the staff since 2017 after roles at other institutions. Straughn joined for Autry’s first season, having previously coached at George Washington. Engelstad served two seasons after coaching Mount St. Mary’s, while Corasaniti advanced from a graduate assistant role to the director of basketball operations before becoming an assistant.

This overhaul signifies a strategic move by Syracuse, aiming to reinvigorate the basketball program as it prepares for future challenges.
