Kelly Clarkson Criticizes ‘American Idol’ for Misleading Prize Claims

Kelly Clarkson has revealed she never received the car promised to her after winning the first season of American Idol over 23 years ago. This disclosure was made on an episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she spoke with Rob Rausch, the winner of Season 4 of The Traitors.

Misleading Prize Claims on American Idol

Clarkson recalled how the show promised substantial rewards for its winners. At the time, the grand prize for American Idol included a recording contract worth $1 million and a car. While many subsequent winners, like Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood, received their cars, Clarkson did not.

Clarkson’s Experience

During the show, Clarkson expressed her frustrations, stating, “They lied. You did not, no. It was like a million dollars worth of investment in you.” She mentioned needing a car due to financial constraints at the time. “My car is bashed in, and I couldn’t afford the insurance deductible,” she explained.

Clarkson humorously recounted feeling frustrated when Aiken told her that he and his mother both received cars as part of their prize. “I was like, ‘What the f*?’” she said. “I’m gonna actually kick your ass right now.” This sentiment reflects her disappointment as other recipients enjoyed benefits she missed out on.

Other Winners’ Experiences

  • Clay Aiken received a car as the Season 2 runner-up.
  • Carrie Underwood, the Season 4 winner, still owns her Ford Mustang convertible.

Underwood shared in a recent interview that the car holds significant sentimental value for her. “It was such a pivotal point in my life,” she remarked.

Changes for Clarkson

Recently, Clarkson announced that The Kelly Clarkson Show would conclude after its seventh season. This decision allows her to focus more on her family, especially after the passing of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, in August 2025.

She shared on Instagram, “Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.” Clarkson is a dedicated mother to her children, River and Remy.
