Big Ten Tournament 2026: Michigan Looms Large as Second Round Tips Off in Chicago
Maryland and Northwestern punched their tickets out of the first round Tuesday night, and the 2026 Big Ten Tournament bracket is now churning through Day 2 at the United Center. Four more second-round games Wednesday will determine who faces the tournament's powerhouses — with top-seeded Michigan waiting until Friday and the rest of the field trying to survive long enough to see them.
First Round Results: Maryland and Northwestern Advance
Maryland opened the tournament with a 70-60 win over Oregon in Game 1, while Northwestern stunned Penn State 76-66 in Game 2 to close out Tuesday's action. Both upsets ripple through the bracket — Maryland now draws Iowa in Wednesday's noon tip, and Northwestern faces Indiana in the evening session.
The Wildcats' win over Penn State sets up a rematch with Indiana, avenging an earlier-season loss. Indiana likely needs a strong tournament showing to secure an at-large NCAA Tournament bid, making Wednesday's game a near-must-win.
Wednesday's Big Ten Tournament Bracket Games
Four games fill out Day 2. Iowa takes on Maryland at noon on Peacock, followed by Washington against USC approximately 25 minutes later on the same stream. The evening slate tips with Northwestern facing Indiana at 6:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network, with Minnesota and Rutgers closing the night.
Iowa arrives with something to prove. The Hawkeyes enter as a projected No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and can take a meaningful step toward locking up an at-large bid with a Wednesday win over Maryland.
The Big Ten Tournament Bracket Picture: Michigan Stands Alone
Regular-season champion Michigan enters as the No. 1 seed and is seeking to become the first back-to-back Big Ten Tournament champion since the Wolverines themselves accomplished it in 2017-18. Ranked third nationally in the AP Top 25, Michigan has a triple bye and does not play until Friday's quarterfinals.
Nobody in the Big Ten has come close to Michigan all season. The Wolverines beat Michigan State twice by double digits — including on the final day of the regular season — and led wire-to-wire in a commanding win over Purdue.
If anyone can get there, it's Michigan State. Tom Izzo's team finished the year winning five of their last six, earned a double-bye as the No. 3 seed, and sits on the opposite side of the bracket from Michigan — meaning the two programs could only meet in the championship game Sunday.
