Adobe has introduced an AI Assistant to enhance image editing capabilities in its products, specifically Photoshop, Express, and Acrobat. This feature is currently available in public beta for the web and mobile versions of Photoshop, though it is not yet accessible on desktop platforms.

AI Assistant Features in Photoshop

The AI Assistant simplifies the editing process. Users can simply describe the edits they wish to make, such as:

  • Removing distractions
  • Changing backgrounds
  • Refining lighting
  • Adjusting color

Once a request is made, users can choose for the AI to apply changes automatically or to provide a step-by-step guide. This educational approach can significantly assist those who find Photoshop’s learning curve steep.

Interaction with the AI

Users can interact with the AI through text queries or voice commands in the mobile app. A notable addition is the AI Markup tool, which allows users to draw on photos and specify desired changes. For instance, a user can mark an area and input a prompt like “add flowers,” which Photoshop will then automatically generate.

Additional Editing Capabilities

The AI Assistant can assist with various tasks, including:

  • Removing unwanted people or objects
  • Changing colors and lighting
  • Refining portraits
  • Tweaking lighting conditions
  • Cropping images for specific contexts

Adobe is also enhancing its Firefly platform, integrating more tools into Photoshop such as Generative Fill, Generative Remove, Generative Expand, Generative Upscale, and Remove Background. These tools utilize the Firefly technology to create innovative editing solutions.

Compatibility and Expansion

Firefly supports a growing array of AI models, now exceeding 25. This includes collaborations with Google’s Nano Banana 2 and OpenAI’s image generation tools. This versatility enhances the capabilities available to Photoshop users during image editing.

The AI Assistant and Firefly image editing tools are available for users on iOS and Android, marking a significant advancement in how professionals and enthusiasts edit images using Adobe’s suite of tools.
