Jets Patiently Eyeing Free Agent QB Market’s Emergence
The New York Jets are strategically navigating the free agent quarterback market as they set their sights on improving their offensive lineup. General Manager Darren Mougey has thus far focused on bolstering the defense, but attention is now shifting toward the quarterback position.
Free Agency Developments
The first day of free agency saw a mix of significant moves across the league, particularly among quarterbacks. The Miami Dolphins made headlines by announcing the release of Tua Tagovailoa, who is expected to join the Atlanta Falcons. Subsequently, they signed Malik Willis, previously of the Green Bay Packers, who is regarded as the top free agent quarterback available.
Jets’ Potential Targets
The Jets are closely monitoring the market, especially given that two prominent quarterbacks are also being released: Kyler Murray and Geno Smith. While Murray has been speculated to be linked to the Minnesota Vikings, no confirmed developments have occurred. Conversely, Geno Smith, who hails from South Florida, may see a pathway back to the Jets, especially following Willis’s move to Miami.
- Tua Tagovailoa: Released by Dolphins, expected to sign with Falcons.
- Malik Willis: Joined Dolphins, considered top free agent quarterback.
- Kyler Murray: Rumored to have interest from Vikings; no solid updates yet.
- Geno Smith: Likely option for Jets with growing chances of return.
Backup Quarterback Updates
Several backup quarterback options have also shifted positions, influencing the Jets’ strategy. Gardner Minshew signed with the Arizona Cardinals, and reports suggest that the Cardinals might view Jacoby Brissett as their starter and Minshew as his backup. Additionally, the Washington Commanders re-signed Marcus Mariota, while the Tennessee Titans picked up Mitchell Trubisky. Both moves have effectively removed potential backup options for the Jets.
The Jets may still consider Andy Dalton, who has previously played under Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich in Carolina. Given the recent shifts, Dalton could emerge as a viable backup option.
Offensive Additions
In terms of other offensive needs, the Jets did not make any moves for a wide receiver on the first day of free agency. However, they may explore trade opportunities for a second receiver to complement Garrett Wilson. Reports indicate that the Jacksonville Jaguars are open to offers for Brian Thomas Jr., who could be a compelling acquisition.
Furthermore, the Jets may need to address their offensive line, particularly at the guard position. With John Simpson signing with the Ravens and Alijah Vera-Tucker likely leaving in free agency, the Jets face a critical decision as they work through their offensive strategy in the lead-up to the new season.
