Kfor Weather brings Penn Square Mall shoppers face-to-face with storm teams

In the middle of Penn Square Mall, shoppers stopped to meet the 4 Warn Storm Team and a group of storm chasers, turning an ordinary March mall visit into a lesson in preparedness. The gathering was part of the Penn Square Mall Severe Weather Awareness Expo, held annually in March, where community groups and responders came together ahead of the severe weather season—blending fan moments with practical information.

Penn Square Mall lines form for Mike Morgan and Emily Sutton

The expo drew a crowd inside Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City, where shoppers packed in to meet the 4 Warn Storm Team and storm chasers. Mike Morgan, Emily Sutton, and the team signed autographs and shared storm stories, while some young fans waited for a chance to talk about what draws them to weather. One young attendee described liking to learn about storms and tornadoes and said they like getting educated by the team chasing tornadoes.

Outside, equipment offered a more concrete view of what severe weather response can look like. The Salvation Army’s Central Oklahoma Area Command displayed its Rapid Response Unit for attendees to view, parked alongside local fire trucks, police vehicles, news helicopters, and equipment from other partner agencies. The mix of vehicles and uniforms turned the mall’s perimeter into a showcase of tools and roles that often come into play when severe weather arrives.

Another attraction was Interceptor 4, described at the expo as a storm chase vehicle and a major hit with attendees. Together, the autograph lines, the vehicle display, and the question-and-answer conversations made the event feel both familiar—like a community meet-and-greet—and pointed toward the realities of the season being discussed.

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command brings services and training to the expo

The Salvation Army’s Central Oklahoma Area Command attended and participated in the 10th Annual Severe Weather Awareness Expo at Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 7. The event brought together responders, community organizations, and local businesses to promote preparedness and awareness ahead of the severe weather season.

Inside the mall, representatives from the Central Oklahoma Area Command hosted an information table and shared details about services offered through The Salvation Army. They spoke with visitors about programs including social services, food pantry support, local thrift stores, and disaster response efforts. Staff and volunteers also discussed training opportunities and emphasized the role volunteers play in supporting neighbors in need.

The booth mixed preparedness messaging with small-scale activities designed to keep people engaged while they asked questions. Visitors were invited to participate in educational table activities, including Salvation Army trivia for small prizes and giveaways. The team also distributed backpacks and connected with other organizations and businesses at the expo, learning more about resources and services available throughout the region.

Representatives from the Central Oklahoma Area Command described the day as fulfilling and said they enjoyed connecting with members of the community and partner organizations. They also said they looked forward to attending again next year, while continuing to seek additional opportunities to serve and include the community.

Kfor Weather timing meets a March expo and a new show planned for March 30

The Penn Square Mall Severe Weather Awareness Expo is held annually in March, and organizers framed this year’s gathering as especially timely, noting that there had already been a burst of tornadic weather. In that setting, the expo offered more than a chance to shake hands with meteorologists. It created a place where the practical and the personal could share the same space: fans meeting weather teams, and residents learning about services and volunteer roles tied to disaster response.

The day also served as a public introduction for another on-air effort connected to the gathering. The hosts of a new lifestyle show called The Spotlight met with 4 Warn Storm Team fans as they waited in line and spoke to them about the program. The show is set to debut on KFOR the morning of March 30 at 11: 30. Mecca Rayne, Owen Pickard, and Caleb Britt met attendees and were described as having a blast shaking hands and working the crowd; they are known as The Spotlighters. Viewers were told they would be hearing more about them throughout the month.

For now, the expo’s shape was defined by the people who showed up and what they chose to do once they arrived—autographs and storm stories on one side, and on the other, conversations about training and volunteer support. In that overlap, kfor weather became less of a forecast and more of a meeting point: a mall-wide reminder that severe weather season can be prepared for in public, one conversation at a time, with March 30 at 11: 30 as the next marked moment on the calendar.
