The requirement is straightforward on paper and punishing in practice, especially with a bench Young has called short.
Young also framed the week as an exercise in managing energy. He described a “less-is-more” approach aimed at keeping players fresh “mentally and physically, ” with the priority on playing extremely hard without getting pulled into distractions beyond that. It is a strategy that fits a tournament, and it also fits a team trying to keep bodies intact at the end of a long season.
T-Mobile Center sets Kansas State and BYU’s first hurdle at 7: 00 p. m. ET
The bracket begins with a single, immediate assignment. Tenth-seeded BYU opens against No. 15 seed Kansas State at 5 p. m. MDT (7: 00 p. m. ET) Tuesday at T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City. It is also a rematch of BYU’s 83-73 win at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan on Jan. 3.
Young said Monday afternoon from the Marriott Downtown East Tower in Kansas City that the Cougars expect every player who suited up Saturday to be available Tuesday. The note carried extra weight because Keita limped off late against Texas Tech, after a game in which he shined defensively. Young said Keita “looks fine, ” while also acknowledging the broader reality of March: players are “kinda banged up at this time of year. ”
For BYU, the tournament math is unforgiving. A win in kansas state vs byu would move the Cougars into a second-round meeting with No. 7 seed West Virginia on Wednesday. Lose, and the season’s next chapter stops before it can turn into the kind of multi-day run the team is chasing.

Richie Saunders, meanwhile, was named to the All-Big 12 second team even though his season ended early.
Saunders missed the final five league games after sustaining a season-ending ACL injury early against Colorado on Feb. 14. Still, his presence has remained visible. During Saturday’s game, he sat at the end of the BYU bench and could often be seen coaching teammates during breaks and timeouts. Young said Saunders has accompanied the team to Kansas City and described “Coach Richie” as “activated. ”
Young also connected those individual honors back to the group that made them possible. He said he was happy for Dybantsa, Saunders, and Wright, calling the awards well-deserved and adding that individual awards function as team awards, too. He broadened that thought to include other players who are hurt or out of the rotation, saying everyone remains invested in offering input and helping the team win.
The week now tests how far that investment can carry. BYU enters the tournament at 21-10 overall and 9-9 in Big 12 play, while Kansas State comes in at 12-19 and 3-15. The path starts with one game at 7: 00 p. m. ET. It continues only if BYU makes it continue, one night at a time, in a building that offers no extra rest days.
Back at the center of it all is Dybantsa, newly decorated and immediately re-assigned to the next possession. The schedule does not pause to admire awards. It moves to Tuesday night at T-Mobile Center, where BYU’s short bench, its role-player surge from Saturday, and its “less-is-more” plan all become real at the opening tip.
