SMU Dominates Syracuse 69-52 in ACC Tournament First Round, Orange Season on the Brink in Charlotte
SMU has turned the 2026 ACC Tournament opener into a lopsided affair, leading Syracuse 69-52 with under eight minutes remaining at Spectrum Center in Charlotte — threatening to end the Orange's season and, potentially, head coach Adrian Autry's tenure in the process.
A Blowout Where the Rematch Narrative Died Fast
The Mustangs held a 21-point lead at their peak and have controlled possession for 75 percent of the game's lead time, while Syracuse has been outrebounded 39-25. The Feb. 14 upset, when the Orange rallied from 12 down at the JMA Wireless Dome to win 79-78 on a last-second Nate Kingz layup, feels like a different sport entirely.
Syracuse is shooting 22 percent from three-point range on the afternoon, connecting on just 6 of 27 attempts, while committing 10 turnovers to SMU's six. The Orange's three-point shooting was already their most glaring liability entering the tournament — Syracuse ranked 225th nationally at 33.2 percent from deep — and it has been exposed at the worst possible moment.
What Autry's Job Depends On
The stakes in Charlotte were never just about a tournament game. Autry's potential make-or-break third season as head coach saw SU fall under .500 in regular season play for the second straight year. Head coaches at Boston College and Georgia Tech were both fired earlier this week, applying direct pressure on Autry to produce results.
The only way Syracuse can snap its four-year NCAA Tournament drought is by winning the ACC Tournament — a task requiring five wins in five days, beginning Tuesday against a team it had just beaten weeks ago. That door is nearly shut.
Donnie Freeman, the Orange's most reliable weapon all season at 17 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, is scoring in garbage time. His contributions haven't been enough. Freeman had recorded back-to-back double-doubles entering the tournament, and Naithan George had averaged 21 points in his two March games — but neither has moved the needle against a Mustangs squad that has simply been the better team tonight.
SMU Playing for Its Tournament Life
For the Mustangs, this win serves a purpose far beyond the ACC bracket. A four-game losing streak to close the regular season had SMU squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into Charlotte. The Mustangs were one of the "Last Four In" per ESPN's bracketology, and a win over Syracuse was described as a much-needed boost for their March Madness standing.
Boopie Miller leads the ACC in both minutes played and steals, and ranks fifth in scoring at 19.4 points per game. He had 32 points in SMU's regular-season finale loss at Florida State and came into Tuesday as the unquestioned engine of this offense. Guard B.J. Edwards, SMU's third-leading scorer, had been considered doubtful with an ankle injury — but the Mustangs haven't needed him.
The winner of this game advances to face sixth-seeded Louisville on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. SMU is on track to get that shot. Louisville won't be an easy out — but the Mustangs will arrive with momentum and, if Tuesday holds, a résumé argument for the NCAA Tournament selection committee that looks considerably stronger than it did 24 hours ago.
For Syracuse, the clock is ticking on more than just this game.
