Joey Barton Remanded in Custody After GBH Charge, Eni Aluko Wins £339,000 Libel Damages on Same Day

Tuesday delivered a total reckoning for Joey Barton. The former Premier League midfielder appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court charged with grievous bodily harm, was denied bail, and was led away in custody — all while a High Court judge simultaneously awarded £339,000 in damages against him in a separate libel case. He didn't make it to either hearing voluntarily.

The Golf Club Assault

Barton was charged with attacking Kevin Lynch, 51, the founder and head teacher of NexGen Academy — a Liverpool school for children with additional needs — outside Huyton and Prescot Golf Club at 9pm Sunday, March 8.

Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns told the court that Lynch had been drinking at the golf club with both defendants that evening. Footage exists, she said, of Lynch and Barton in what appeared to be a heated discussion. The men then went outside. A witness described seeing a man being assaulted before an ambulance was called.

Lynch was treated in hospital for serious injuries to his face and body and remained in a serious but stable condition Tuesday. A neighbour told the Liverpool Echo they had seen a man on the floor with blood on him before ringing 999, and later watched police washing blood from the pavement Monday morning.

Both Barton and co-defendant Gary O'Grady, 50, a self-employed roofer from Huyton, appear on England Golf lists as members of the club where the alleged assault took place.

In the Dock

Barton arrived at Liverpool Magistrates' Court in a prison van and appeared in the dock alongside O'Grady. Both are jointly accused of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. District Judge James Hatton refused bail and remanded Barton in custody. O'Grady was released on conditional bail — prohibited from contacting Lynch or entering the golf club.

Both men were told they "vehemently deny" the charge, with their next court appearance set for April 7. Barton will remain in prison until at least that date unless he successfully applies for bail before then.

The High Court Verdict He Missed

Barton's Tuesday didn't begin or end in Liverpool. At the High Court in London, Mr Justice Lavender awarded former England footballer and broadcaster Eni Aluko £339,000 in damages and legal costs after she sued Barton for libel over two posts he made on X in 2024.

Barton had wrongly claimed in those posts that Aluko had "cynically sought to exploit her status as an alleged victim of racism and bullying," and made additional accusations about her late father's finances. The judge noted Barton did not attend the hearing — because he was in police custody. Lavender gave him seven days to apply to vary the order given the circumstances.

The Timeline Behind It

Barton had attended the Newcastle United vs Manchester City FA Cup match at St James' Park on Saturday, posing for photos with supporters in the bar area and watching from the East Stand. Within 24 hours of that match ending, he was under arrest.

It is not the first time a court date has defined his public profile. Barton served 77 days of a six-month prison sentence in 2008 for assault. He made 269 Premier League appearances for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle, QPR, Burnley, and Rangers, earned one England cap, and later managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers before pivoting to podcasting.

District Judge Hatton set April 7 as the date for both men's next appearance.
