Google Responds to User Feedback on AI ‘Ask Photos’ Search Feature
Google has taken steps to address user concerns regarding its AI-enhanced search feature, Ask Photos, in the Google Photos app. The company is introducing a toggle that allows users to revert to the classic search method. This decision comes in response to feedback from users who preferred the previous experience.
New Toggle for Google Photos Search
Launched in the U.S. in 2024, the Ask Photos feature enables users to conduct photo searches using natural language queries. However, some users expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the AI-powered searches often failed to locate their images as accurately as the traditional method.
User Feedback Influences Changes
Last summer, the rollout of Ask Photos was paused to address latency issues highlighted by user reports. Many users were not entirely convinced about the benefits of AI in their photo searches. In the past, Google provided an option to disable the use of its AI model, Gemini, but it was not easily accessible.
- The new toggle button is located prominently on the search screen.
- This allows users to switch off the Ask Photos AI search easily.
- Classic search results will be displayed when the feature is toggled off.
Commitment to Improving User Experience
Shimrit Ben-Yair, the head of Google Photos, acknowledged the role of user feedback in shaping this update. In a recent post on X, she emphasized the importance of user control over search results. She stated, “We’ve heard your feedback that you want more control over the type of results you see when searching in Google Photos.”
Furthermore, Ben-Yair indicated that Google has made improvements to the quality of popular searches based on user suggestions. The intention is to enhance the overall experience in Google Photos, a feature highly valued by users. Google is committed to continually refining the search capabilities in response to ongoing feedback.
