New Tip Booking System Launches Soon

New Tip Booking System Launches Soon

Dorset Council is set to unveil a new booking system for its Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) in March. The implementation aims to enhance the visiting experience at four sites: Dorchester, Wimborne, Shaftesbury, and Sherborne.

Key Details of the New Booking System

Starting Monday, March 23, 2023, the booking system will provide an efficient way for residents to access recycling facilities. Here are the particulars:

  • Booking Start Date: March 16, 2023
  • Daily Slot Availability: 430 bookable slots per site
  • Arrival Window: 30 minutes
  • Advance Booking: Up to two weeks
  • Multiple Bookings: Allowed on the same day

Current Foot Traffic and System Goals

Each recycling centre currently accommodates approximately 380 visits daily. The council’s initiative intends to:

  • Reduce queues and improve the overall experience.
  • Ensure fair access for residents and taxpayers.
  • Minimize business use at household recycling sites.

Feedback and Community Response

The launch follows a public backlash against an earlier, broader booking system proposal. Local councillors and residents voiced concerns over the free-to-use booking slots that were initially planned for implementation in autumn 2022. As a result, the council decided to limit the booking system to four key locations.

While Dorset residents can use the service without charge, non-residents will incur a fee for each visit. Other recycling centres in the area remain open without requiring a booking, except for those with DIY waste.

Official Statements on the Initiative

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, emphasized that feedback from the community played a pivotal role in shaping this new system. He remarked, “This approach not only enhances the experience for households but also ensures that local taxpayers are not burdened with costs associated with waste disposal from neighboring areas.” He added that it also promotes a cleaner, greener environment by reducing congestion and improving recycling efficiency.

Continued Success in Recycling

Dorset Council proudly maintains its status as the top-performing unitary authority for recycling in England. The new booking system aims to further this success by distributing demand effectively across the centres, thereby alleviating congestion and reducing emissions.

A spokesperson from the council reiterated the benefits of the booking system: “We are aware this is a major shift, but it promises shorter wait times and equitable service usage for all users. We will continually assess the effectiveness of this system and remain open to feedback from the community to ensure ongoing improvement.”
