MLS Permanently Bans Jones, Yeboah for Betting on Their Own Games
Major League Soccer (MLS) has issued lifetime bans to players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah for violating league gambling policies. This decision follows the outcome of an in-depth investigation triggered by suspicious betting alerts.
Investigation Findings
The investigation was initiated after the league received concerns regarding betting activities related to the players. In October 2025, both Jones and Yeboah were placed on administrative leave as the examination into possible violations took place.
Following the investigation, the MLS determined that both players engaged in extensive gambling activities on soccer matches, which included wagering on their own teams during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. A notable instance involved Jones betting on himself to receive a yellow card in a match on October 19, 2024, which he subsequently did.
Commissioner’s Statement
MLS Commissioner Don Garber emphasized the league’s commitment to maintaining match integrity. He stated, “The League will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”
