USA vs. Mexico WBC 2026: Paul Skenes Takes the Mound in Pool B's Winner-Take-All Showdown
The most anticipated game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic pool play stage is underway Monday night, March 9, at Daikin Park in Houston. Team USA and Mexico are both 2-0 — and whoever wins tonight goes to 3-0 and claims Pool B's top seed heading into the Miami quarterfinals.
USA vs. Mexico WBC: The Stakes Could Not Be Higher
Whichever team wins this game will be 3-0 with one game remaining in pool play. Losing would not eliminate either team, but the pressure would be extremely high given a threat of an early tournament exit, especially with Italy also sitting at 2-0 in the pool.
Team USA and Mexico go way back in the WBC rivalry — and Mexico holds the historical edge. The two nations have met four times in WBC play entering Monday, with Mexico owning a 3-1 advantage. In 2023, Mexico dominated the U.S. 11-5 in pool play behind a two-homer game from Joey Meneses.
USA manager Mark DeRosa acknowledged the rivalry plainly: "The U.S. has had their hands full with them in this tournament the last couple of installments of it. I certainly haven't forgotten about it."
Paul Skenes Starts for Team USA Against Mexico's Manny Barreda
Paul Skenes is expected to take the mound for Team USA tonight against Mexico — one of the most anticipated individual pitching performances of the entire tournament. The Pittsburgh Pirates ace has drawn comparisons to the best WBC pitching performances in the event's history.
Mexico counters with right-hander Manny Barreda. Tonight's confirmed Team USA starting lineup was posted on social media by USA Baseball before first pitch at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper Lead Team USA's Star-Studded Lineup
Team USA has put together its most star-studded WBC roster in history, led by captain Aaron Judge and supported by Cal Raleigh, Bobby Witt Jr., Kyle Schwarber, and Bryce Harper. The rotation is headlined by Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes.
Team USA opened against Brazil with a 15-5 win on Friday behind a home run from captain Judge in his first WBC at-bat, then beat Great Britain 9-1 on Saturday with Skubal on the mound and Kyle Schwarber providing the fireworks at the plate.
Mexico Baseball Team Enters Riding Historic Momentum
Mexico beat Great Britain 8-2 in their Classic opener on Friday, then followed that with the mercy-rule 16-0 destruction of Brazil on Sunday — the third-largest margin of victory in any game in WBC history.
Mexico manager Benji Gil said before tonight's game: "They are a super team. They have a roster full of stars — All-Stars, MVP candidates, Cy Young candidates, Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers. But it's not about awards. It's about winning one game."
Jonathan Aranda, one of Mexico's key offensive contributors, had said these WBC games top even World Series games in his eyes. "There's no comparison," he said. "Nothing compares to you representing your own country and having the name on your chest."
What Comes Next: USA vs. Italy and Mexico vs. Italy on the Line
Following tonight's game, the USA plays Italy on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. ET on FS1, while Mexico plays Italy on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET on Tubi. Italy is also 2-0 in Pool B, making it a genuine three-way race for the two quarterfinal spots heading out of Houston.
First pitch for USA vs. Mexico was 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox from Daikin Park in Houston. Check back for the final score as results are confirmed.
