Jaelan Phillips Signs With Carolina Panthers: Eagles Lose $120M Edge Rusher on Day One of Free Agency
The Philadelphia Eagles' offseason took a significant hit Monday afternoon, March 9. Despite weeks of reported optimism about a reunion and a push well over $20 million annually, Jaelan Phillips chose the Carolina Panthers over Philadelphia on the opening hours of the 2026 NFL free agency tampering period.
Jaelan Phillips Panthers Contract: Four Years, $120M With $80M Guaranteed
Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips agreed to a four-year, $120 million deal with the Panthers that includes $80 million in guaranteed money, ESPN reported Monday.
At $30 million per year, the Jaelan Phillips contract makes him the eighth-highest paid edge rusher in the NFL on an annual basis — a price tag that was simply too steep for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman to match given Philadelphia's current cap structure.
Carolina's pass rush ranked 31st in the league in sacks last season — a glaring weakness that Panthers GM Dan Morgan has said repeatedly he wants to fix. Morgan publicly stated he can never have too many players off the edge, and he backed that philosophy up with a blockbuster investment on Day One of free agency.
Eagles Made a Strong Push to Keep Jaelan Phillips — But Were Outbid
The Eagles had been offering Phillips well over $20 million annually and were working hard to retain him heading into the tampering window. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network had reported significant progress toward a deal as recently as Sunday evening.
In his eight games after being traded from Miami, Phillips produced 28 total tackles, seven quarterback hits, four passes defended, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He had called the Eagles trade the best thing that ever happened to him — making his decision to leave all the more stunning in Philadelphia.
The Eagles now face a critical cap decision: the more aggressively Roseman pursues replacement free agents to fill the edge rusher void, the greater the risk of cancelling out a projected 2027 third-round compensatory pick for losing Phillips.
AJ Brown's Future in Philadelphia Now Directly Connected to the Phillips Departure
The Jaelan Phillips departure has a direct downstream effect on the AJ Brown situation. With cap space now redirected toward finding pass rush help, there is added pressure on Roseman to resolve the Brown situation — whether through a trade, extension, or release — as Philadelphia cannot absorb major contracts at every position simultaneously.
Dallas Goedert's departure is also expected after eight seasons in Philadelphia, meaning the Eagles could enter the 2026 season having lost both their top edge rusher and their starting tight end in the same free agency cycle.
How Jaelan Phillips Fits the Carolina Panthers' Defensive Rebuild
Phillips will join a Panthers front that already includes Derrick Brown and 2025 rookie Nic Scourton. All three produced five sacks last season — giving defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero legitimate threats at three separate points along the defensive line for the first time in years.
Phillips also has experience playing on the interior, giving Evero a genuine chess piece who can create mismatches in sub-packages. The Panthers are not expected to be completely finished at edge rusher despite the Phillips signing, with a top-100 edge prospect still a possibility in the 2026 NFL Draft.
