Trooper Killed in Chester County Traffic Stop, Pennsylvania Police Confirm
A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was tragically killed during a traffic stop in Chester County on the evening of March 8, 2026. Corporal Timothy O’Connor Jr., age 40, responded to a report of an erratic driver at approximately 8 p.m. in Honey Brook.
Details of the Incident
Corporal O’Connor stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Route 10 and Michael Road in West Caln Township. According to Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, O’Connor made a radio call to indicate the traffic stop, which was the last communication he was able to make. Moments after approaching the vehicle, O’Connor was shot by the driver, identified as 32-year-old Jesse Nathan Elks from Honey Brook, Pennsylvania.
Aftermath of the Shooting
Elks exited the vehicle shortly after the incident and subsequently took his own life with a pistol, leading investigators to classify the event as a murder-suicide. Governor Josh Shapiro, along with law enforcement officials, addressed the media following the incident, expressing condolences to O’Connor’s family. “The Pennsylvania State Police family lost a son, lost a hero, and lost a dedicated public servant,” Shapiro stated.

The community paid tribute to Corporal O’Connor as his body was escorted from Paoli Hospital to the coroner’s office in West Chester. A somber procession accompanied by Chopper 6 highlighted the profound loss felt across Pennsylvania. In honor of O’Connor, Governor Shapiro has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff throughout the state.

Corporal O’Connor served with distinction in the Pennsylvania State Police. He enlisted in September 2010 after graduating from the 131st cadet class, beginning his career with Troop J, Avondale. He later joined the Criminal Investigation Unit in October 2016 and was transferred to Troop J, Embreeville in March 2022. O’Connor was promoted to corporal soon after in July 2022.
His dedicated service marked him as the 105th member of the Pennsylvania State Police to lose his life in the line of duty. According to Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, “This is a tragic day for all of us. We have lost a dear member of our family—a hero and a valued public servant.” O’Connor leaves behind a wife and daughter.
