Jk Dobbins’ return locks in Broncos’ backfield plan on two-year deal
With jk dobbins set to be back in Denver, the Broncos can shift their free-agency attention toward other roster needs while keeping their 2025 leading rusher in place for 2026. The Broncos agreed to terms on a two-year deal for J. K. Dobbins, and Dobbins also signaled the news himself on social media as free agency opened.
Sean Payton gets continuity at running back as Denver reshapes its shopping list
Re-signing Dobbins gives head coach Sean Payton a known centerpiece for the backfield after a season in which Dobbins became both a production driver and a locker-room presence. With Dobbins back “at a lower price point, ” Denver can now turn its attention to further spending at wide receiver, tight end and inside linebacker.
That shift matters because several of the “top-of-market” running back options moved quickly once the legal tampering period began Monday. Kenneth Walker III landed with the Kansas City Chiefs, and Travis Etienne went to the New Orleans Saints, shrinking the pool of premium alternatives while reinforcing Denver’s preference to retain a player it already valued.
Payton has also been explicit that improving the run game remains a priority beyond any single signing. In late January, he described it as a point of emphasis the team planned to “research and look into heavily, ” while outlining an offensive mindset that balances flexibility with personnel packages, including two-back and multiple-tight-end looks.
J. K. Dobbins and Davis Webb: the 2026 backfield plan takes shape
The agreement keeps the Broncos’ leading rusher from 2025 in the fold and positions Dobbins to spearhead the backfield again. It also keeps intact a pairing with second-year running back RJ Harvey, with Dobbins continuing as a mentor in new play-caller Davis Webb’s offense.
Even with Dobbins secured, Denver still has room to add another running back for depth. The team has re-signed exclusive-rights free agent Tyler Badie, while reserve back Jaleel McLaughlin has hit unrestricted free agency. The club has also acknowledged the possibility of adding another runner to “juice the room, ” particularly given Dobbins’ injury history.
On the field, Dobbins’ 2025 season offered a clear snapshot of why the Broncos wanted him back. He was the engine and frequent closer for Denver’s offense for 10 games, producing 772 rushing yards on 5. 0 yards per carry before a midseason, season-ending Lisfranc injury.
Another set of team-level numbers underscored his impact. Before Dobbins’ Week 10 injury in 2025, the Broncos averaged 128. 6 rushing yards per game and 4. 76 yards per carry. After the injury, that output dipped to 104. 6 rushing yards and 3. 94 yards per carry per game.
From January’s pledge to a new deal: what brought jk dobbins back
The path to a return has been visible for months. At his end-of-year press conference in January, Dobbins said he identified with the franchise and wanted to remain in Denver. “I’m a Bronco, ” he said at that session, adding that he believed he was a Bronco even though he was not drafted there.
His rehab timeline also became part of the story. Dobbins worked back quickly enough to return to practice the week of the Broncos’ eventual AFC championship-game loss to the Patriots, after the Lisfranc injury ended his regular season. After the season, he said he, team staff and doctors discussed whether he could have played against New England, but ultimately decided to hold off if the Broncos made the Super Bowl.
Dobbins also credited organizational support during that recovery. He said he was able to get back on the practice field in 2. 5 months and described requesting resources from (Greg) Penner that he said were provided.
The deal also closes a major question for Denver as free agency began. An NFL insider, Ian Rapoport, posted Monday that Dobbins was returning to Denver after the sides reached an agreement. Separately, Dobbins indicated the move himself online, including a post featuring an orange heart and a photo with guard Ben Powers and receiver Marvin Mims Jr., along with another message that read “
#Home. ”
What could change the picture next is how Denver finishes constructing the backfield around him. If the Broncos decide they need more depth alongside Dobbins and Harvey, their next running back addition would further define the rotation heading into 2026.
