Amazon has significantly increased the price of Pokémon Pokopia’s physical edition to $80 amidst stock shortages. This adjustment comes as demand surges for the Nintendo Switch 2 game. Retailers are experiencing limited availability, with numerous outlets already out of stock. Fortunately, Amazon still offers Pokémon Pokopia in the U.S., but at this elevated price.

Price Increases and Market Dynamics

This is the second time in just two months that Amazon has raised prices for a physical Switch 2 game. Previously, Resident Evil Requiem was priced at $76.84, nearly $7 over its suggested retail price. Pokémon Pokopia has an official retail price of $70, but buyers seeking physical copies now face a fee of $79.99—up $10 due to scarce inventory.

Global Availability Issues

The shortage is not limited to the U.S.; physical copies of Pokémon Pokopia are also hard to come by in other markets. Chris Dring, head of The Game Business, recently noted that UK retailers are struggling to keep the game in stock. This shortage has led to less than half the sales compared to last year’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A launch.

Possible Supply Strategies

Questions arise regarding Nintendo’s intention behind the limited supply of physical copies. It appears that the Pokémon Pokopia physical edition operates primarily as a Game-Key Card launch. This strategy might be designed to encourage consumers towards purchasing digital downloads. Given the game’s life simulation style, Nintendo may anticipate sustained digital sales, keeping the game accessible for weeks and months.

Nintendo’s Pricing Policy

While Amazon has set the price for Pokémon Pokopia at $80, Nintendo has only officially designated one title, Mario Kart World, at this price point. Several re-released titles for Switch 2, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, have also hit the same pricing levels. Nintendo has indicated it will explore variable pricing for its latest console, allowing retailers to set their own prices.
