Ford Recalls Over 1.7 Million Vehicles for Safety Fixes
Ford has announced two significant recalls affecting approximately 1.74 million vehicles in the United States. These measures are prompted by safety concerns linked to software issues that directly impact rearview camera functionality.
Details of the Recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that certain models are affected by this recall. These include:
- 2021-2026 Ford Broncos
- 2021-2024 Ford Edges
- 2020-2022 Ford Escapes
- 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsairs
- 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators
- 2020-2024 Lincoln Explorers
Specifically, the recall includes:
- 849,310 units of Ford Broncos and Edges
- 889,950 units of Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers
Software Malfunctions
The identified issues involve overheating internal components within the infotainment system. This malfunction can cause the rearview image to either fail to display when reversing or show a flipped or inverted image. While Ford acknowledges the presence of these defects, it claims there have been no reported injuries or accidents related to the recalls as per NHTSA documents.
Ford’s Response and Solutions
To address the problem with the Bronco and Edge models, Ford will provide a free software update targeting the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Vehicle owners will receive notifications by mail at the end of the month. The update can be processed at a dealership or through an “over-the-air” system.
Currently, Ford is still developing a solution for the Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers. In the meantime, interim letters will also be sent out to owners to inform them about potential safety risks.
