Google Messages Enhances Smart Reply with Major Upgrade

Google Messages has received a significant update to its Smart Reply feature, enhancing user interaction with the app. This functionality has been in existence since 2018 but has faced some challenges with accidental taps on suggested replies. The January update hinted at a new draft toggle, which has now begun to roll out to a select group of users.

Enhancements in Smart Reply

With the latest version, Google Messages (version 20260303_00_RC00) introduces a draft toggle. This feature allows users to choose between two modes: Tap to Send and Tap to Draft. The default setting is Tap to Send, which functions as the traditional Smart Reply, sending a suggestion immediately. However, users have the option to flip the toggle to Tap to Draft, which places the suggested reply in the text field for editing before sending.

Benefits of Tap to Draft

  • Reduces accidental message sending.
  • Allows users to customize their replies.
  • Maintains existing functionality for those accustomed to Tap to Send.

This innovative solution simplifies the user experience by consolidating the functionality into one toggle. Although some may find it initially confusing, many believe it can significantly enhance the Smart Reply system.

Additional Features Rolling Out

In parallel with the Smart Reply enhancements, Google Messages is also introducing real-time location sharing. This feature can be accessed through the chat screen’s ‘+’ menu, alongside a traditional Location option that provides fixed locations without GPS tracking. Additionally, users will soon have access to a Trash folder in beta, offering a safety net for recovering accidentally deleted messages.

Summary of New Features

  • Draft Toggle for Smart Reply: Switch between sending instantly or editing first.
  • Real-time Location Sharing: Available through the ‘+’ menu in chats.
  • Trash Folder: Recover deleted conversations in beta.

The rollout of these features is currently limited to beta testers, with broader availability expected in the near future. These updates reflect Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience in Google Messages, making everyday communication smoother and more reliable.
